  1. Samsung 850 EVO ReadSpeedTester results (slowdowns yes/no)?

I ran this on my 850 EVO in March of this year and uploaded the results in the original thread, post 15. In summary, there was no slow down after 3 months.
  2. Time to disable Samsung RAPID...

Not being funny but I think it is wrong you have made a thread blaming RAPID without any evidence whatsoever. RAPID may have been the cause of your corruption but unless you are prepared to repeat the power outage yourself with RAPID on and off a couple of times I think it's wrong to create a...
  3. Member

+1. Just wrap them in an anti-static bag and then in a protective case / padding and that will be fine.
  4. Inconsistent boot / restart times on Windows 10

Ever since moving to Win10 I have noticed how erratic my startup and restart times are. Most the time, the restarts zip through whereas startup from a shutdown always takes longer to boot up. Given my limited knowledge how modern Windows shuts down and starts up, I would have expected this to...
  5. SSD Firmware upgrade

I agree it's often prudent to wait a month or so before applying the update. But you should do it eventually.
  6. SSD Firmware upgrade

This is bad advice. Whether it is firmware updates, BIOS updates, driver updates, you should always keep things updated.
  7. Partitioning a SSD

There is no technical reason why you cannot partition an SSD. Whether there is any point comes down to the useage case, which if you had read the OP you would have seen that there is a benefit to the user to use partitions.
  8. Samsung 950 Pro FW

    Are you on Magician 4.9.7?
  9. Xps 8900 and Evo 850 will not see 6tb WD black

AFAIK there won't be any negative to running two single drives in RAID but that's not the point, it should work in AHCI. It's stuff like this which annoy me with OEM machines. Always these type of random niggles which just shouldn't happen and don't happen on whiteboxes.
  10. Xps 8900 and Evo 850 will not see 6tb WD black

My hunch is it won't. Personally, I never use OEM OS installs and always install a clean copy myself. If you feel the same you could diskpart clean the 1TB and connect it as the secondary HDD and boot from the SSD to see if it appears in device manager. That'll rule out any weird conflict...
  11. Xps 8900 and Evo 850 will not see 6tb WD black

I don't think you will need a driver from WD. It's all built into the GPT standard. Do you have another HDD knocking about, something smaller you could swap in just to see if it picks it up?
  12. new 850pro firmware update possible without magician ?

I don't think they release the ISO's anymore, which is a bit of an oversight as clearly not everybody uses Windows.
  13. Xps 8900 and Evo 850 will not see 6tb WD black

If it's being displayed in device manager then Windows isn't registering it. The SATA cable works when in BIOS. Did you clone your Windows 10 install from the Dell image or install from scratch? If you cloned, I think you should download the Windows 10 media from Microsoft and install a...
  14. Xps 8900 and Evo 850 will not see 6tb WD black

Does it appear in device manager when you expand disk drives?
  15. Xps 8900 and Evo 850 will not see 6tb WD black

Have you gone through all your BIOS settings to make sure there isn't some stupid setting like "SATA port disabled"? I have seen settings like this and would explain the symptoms you have.
  16. SSD Recommendation-

  17. New Samsung Magician v4.9.6 pulled...?

Can you enable the hardware encryption without Magician? I forgot that one, if not, then you need Magician for that as well. I also wouldn't uninstall it. They've finally added an easy "remove from startup" if you right click the icon so there's no harm in it being installed for the uses it...
  18. Old and Lazy as I am, I pose a question: "What advantages in GPT versus MBR format?

Windows secure boot only works with UEFI and thus GPT.
  19. Install Win10 on M.2 SSD 256 GB or on SSD 2.5" SATA III 1TB

I would install the OS on the 256GB and then run benchmarks on the two. if the difference is minor then I would install the OS + apps on the 256GB and have the 1TB for data.
  20. New Samsung Magician v4.9.6 pulled...?

Samsung don't publish SSD firmwares in ISO format on their global downloads page anymore so unless they're hidden away somewhere else Magician is the only way to do firmware updates.
  21. Slow USB 3.0 speeds

Windows 10 comes with a built in USB3 driver but you can check the Dell website to see if they have released a specific USB3 driver for your laptop. If not then it's most likely going to be a crappy USB3 controller inside your SATA>USB3 adapter. If you choose to replace it do some research...
  22. Crucial MX300

Surprised they are doing a 750GB. Samsung binned that off because people just bought 1TB instead.
  23. cloning ssd trouble

Can you post some benchmark scores (eg. crystaldiskmark) and give us some information about the specification of your computer.
  24. New Theme!

Not a fan personally, I like the classic feel of VB forums. Please do not make this compulsory.
  25. bsod ntoskrnl.exe

You are probably correct, however you have a fault which you can't diagnose so if you want to get to the bottom of it you are going to have to work logically and rule things out, even if that means spending some time on things just to eliminate them. Your call though.
  26. WD Black 5tb with 128MB RAM or 4TB SSHD?

Having an SSHD for a storage drive kind of defeats the purpose. The purpose is to use it as a boot drive and it will learn what gets used the most (ie, OS, regular programs etc..) and cache them into the NAND portion of the drive for quicker access. By using it on a storage volume this isn't...
  27. bsod ntoskrnl.exe

Tried resetting CMOS just incase your BIOS has got messed up?
  28. Am I wasting $$ on a Samsung 950 Pro SSD?

Yes. A decent SATA drive like the 850 EVO or 850 Pro will be fine.
  29. Motherboard vs CPU memory speed limit, which one to use?

The CPU officially supports a maximum speed of 1600. You can run higher speeds as indicated by the motherboard spec sheet but you will have to overclock to achieve this. Overclocking can be 100% stable if done correctly but it can also be unstable and damaging if done incorrectly. You also...
  30. Preliminary results for Crucial BX200 concerning degraded read speeds

Nice little program. I know a few people have been wondering if the 850 EVO suffers from the same issue so I just tested it and the results are below. Average read was actually 527MB/s not what's displayed below. This is because I wasn't able to reboot my machine before running the test and...
  31. An RMA-process Review for Western Digital

I should do an RMA review of Corsair. I bought a Flash Voyager GS 64GB because of it's advertised sequential write speed of 170MB/s. The unit I received would only reach 100MB/s no matter what computer, OS or settings were used. I had to return it at my cost for them to send me another one...
  32. 2 SSD boot options in UEFI.

GPT brings more to the table than just partition size limits. If you want to use the secure boot feature of Windows 8 and up then you need to use GPT. Also if you want to disable CSM (compatibility support module) in your UEFI for a faster boot you also need to use GPT. OP - When you install...
  33. Samsung 850 Pro or 850 Evo?

The main differentiator is endurance. The Pro uses MLC NAND which is more durable (aka, it can be written to more times) than TLC NAND used in the EVO. Unless you run a write intensive workload it's highly unlikely you will need MLC NAND. Outside of benchmarks you won't notice the difference...
  34. 16gb ram user experience

There is no logic to having a 16GB page file. Windows 7 mirrors the size of the RAM and the page file and I used to change it to 1024-2048MB. I can't speak for Windows 8 because I avoided it but Windows 10 has set my page file to 2GB based on 8GB. If it isn't already, I would set it to 2GB.
  35. Crazy sudden memory problem on dell xps 1

Windows is highly customisable. I have a whole raft of customisations I do and things I change/disable on a clean format to get it how I like it. If you don't use indexing or instant search in things like Outlook you can leave Windows Search disabled and probably won't even notice.
  36. Crazy sudden memory problem on dell xps 1

Performs better is it fixed? show us your screenshots again. Windows can be very easy to break and very difficult to fix. If you can't be bothered to reformat you can just keep Windows search disabled. I think it only really affects indexing and things like instant search in Outlook.
  37. "Dummy DIMMs" and dust prevention?

Canned air is not really much good if the PC is very dusty. What you want is a "DataVac Electric Duster". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DzLaGHxE6BM I blast all my machines out every 6 months or so and it's as powerful as a compressed air line. Not cheap, think I paid about £50 for mine but...
  38. Do I really need a surveillance disk drive for this?

You should use an AV drive. I forget where I read this now but it was on a white paper from one of the major HDD manufacturers that normal SATA drives are only "rated" for 8 hours of operation per day. Now obviously many people run them 24/7 but how long a nornal drive will last in a DVR...
  39. Crazy sudden memory problem on dell xps 1

A quick Google on searchfilterhost.exe reveals lots of hits of information about what it is and advice on what how to deal with it. I would suggest working through them. You could open services.msc and disable "Windows search" (and reboot) and try that for a while. Your PC will function fine...
