*Fixed* Better to Spin down HD or keep them running

It's pretty even. Leaving the drive spinning will wear the bearing faster, but the bearing is built to last a *really* long time. Stop/start cycles will cause the heads to park, most drives are spec'd for ~300,000 load/unload cycles, which can go really fast.

    Bad hard drive circuit board

The whole "just move the circuit board it will work" is a very old solution. maybe 1 in 100 *might* work, but thats not likely. on modern drives (made 2002 and later) there is adaptive data stored on the PCB that is like a fingerprint for the drive. It's function can be considered...

Hard drives are pretty shock resistant these days.

notebook drives have been using accelerometers for a few years now. All notebook drives use ramps for parking the heads, most desktops drives are adopting this now to, although seagate and samsung seem to not want to use ramps for their desktop drives...

Hard drives are pretty shock resistant these days.

Ultimately, I tell everyone I come in contact to this: No matter what brand, mode, etc you buy. They are ALL hard drives, and they are ALL mechanical devices with moving parts. They ALL have a fairly equal chance to fail, some are more likely to fail in certain ways then others...

Hard drives are pretty shock resistant these days.

They are not as resistant as you may think, you just got REALLY lucky. Western Digitals locking mechanism on their scorpios is flawed, and they knock loose easy and the heads will become stuck to the platters. This is a common failure. Seagate heads crash and scrape the coating of the...

Intel X25-M G1 failed - any chance for data recovery?

With SSD, similar to HDD, the manufacturer may revise the code in the controller over the course of it's life. This can come in several forms, a firmware update, or in a hardware update/change. So first you must make sure you have the exact same revision controller. Next, you must...

Intel X25-M G1 failed - any chance for data recovery?

Controller problems are F'd. It is so hard to recover SSD with failed controller, it is very expensive. Luckily, I feel that this *may* not be a controller issue. I would: Make a duplicate of the drive (you will need something beyond windows software to do this because of the instability)...

RAID 0 data recovery - creating a block level copy?

The only RAID tool that will guess is Raid Reconstructor which I have not had great experiences with. Everything else it is up to the technician/user to figure out. You will need to use linux to do ddrescue. I would make a knoppix CD and put it on there that is the easiest way.

FiOS - Download Cap for Newsgroups

I think you are confusing bits with bytes. 25Mb is megabit which is how ISP measure their speed. easiest way to calc your "theoretical" speed is to turn Mb into Kb: 25000Kb Then divide by 8 because there are 8 bits in a byte (normally). 3125KB/s is your theoretical max.

RAID 0 data recovery - creating a block level copy?

The results seem to show that the drives arn't in TOO bad condition. You should be able to make complete copies of the drives using http://www.gnu.org/software/ddrescue/ddrescue.html once you have the copies, you can probably plug them back into the raid and they will work. If...

RAID 0 data recovery - creating a block level copy?

The Atola is fairly easy to use. You would just either image to a new working drive, or a file, and then rebuild the raid virtually using software like R-Studio or UFS explorer. You should download www.hddscan.com run a linear read test, and then switch to map view and see how it is...

RAID 0 data recovery - creating a block level copy?

There is no software that exists that will do this WELL on a drive that is failing. There is a few hardware/software complex that exist for this purpose, but they are not cheap and are designed for data recovery professionals. Atola Imager $1890 DeepSpar ~$2500 Data Compass - $...

Old Republic will be the greatest failure in MMO or EA history

As a hardcore PVP oriented gamer I would like to see a game like UO flourish, but unfortunately the "masses" are not really interested in that type of game anymore, and myself, and my guild as a whole have accepted that those days are gone and past, and while a hardcore game may present itself...

I am not sure what you mean, but WoW has more endgame then any other MMO before it.. and trust me, I am far from a WoW fanboi, but I can't argue the fact that WoW has endgame. It has a huge abundance of content to wade through. It has an arena system that if you play enough could even make you...

Old Republic will be the greatest failure in MMO or EA history

It was already said, but just because someone knows single player RPG does not make them in any way credible in multiplayer/mmo. in fact I would say that someone who has only made single player rpg will actually hinder the project with their views because they are going to focus too hard on...

I am not sure how having a 300m budget makes this game a "sure success". No amount of money can help you if your decision makers are asshats with less mmo experience then my Dog. The problem with these companies? They put people in positions to make decisions who don't have a true love...

Old Republic will be the greatest failure in MMO or EA history

Anyone who says DAOC was a bad game I just can't take seriously. Sorry. Warhammer on the otherhand was a major failure, and everyone who was in alpha and beta (myself included) knew this. While I am sure there is a certain amount of bitterness involved in being laid off; I believe this...

    Recertified WD20EADS with Advanced Format?

    Recertified WD20EADS with Advanced Format?

I believe there ARE samsung 1TB that are 2 platters, but the exact models I would need to look up. The website linked above seems pretty nifty, and fairly accurate. the "n" is the number of heads, which is usually going to be double the number of platters as platter can support 2 heads...

    Recertified WD20EADS with Advanced Format?

    Recertified WD20EADS with Advanced Format?

Knowing WD, I will bet that it IS an advanced format drive. I could go into a long rant about what drive manufacturers actually do when they refurb drives, but that would just terrify you more. Buy a new drive for you important data, better yet, buy two and keep a back up. Use...

    WD3200AAKS - disappearing bad sectors?

Nevermind, I woke up and read the software output. Sigh I don't like WD software. Those are the SMART field IDs; this drive has no reallocated event OR reallocated sectors. run this: www.hddscan.com make sure you use the sector access time view. see how the surface...

    WD3200AAKS - disappearing bad sectors?

Incorrect, SMART values on modern drives are stored different depending on the field. In the case of these fields there is a Value, Worst, and Threshold (your three other numbers listed) and then there is a "RAW" value of that field. The RAW value is recorded normally in WD drives, hence you...

    WD3200AAKS - disappearing bad sectors?

Yep. What program gave that output? It presents things kind of badly. My guess is that the drive has reallocated 196 sectors, there is almost definitely more, but the drive has not run into them yet.

problem with a WD Mybook 500gb

The drives they use in externals are "cheaper" even though they may have the same model number as a drive you can buy OEM. Hard drives are mechanical devices that are mass produced. They are liable to fail at ANY time. They are the worst possible device to trust with data. Always keep...

    WD3200AAKS - disappearing bad sectors?

If you can view SMART you will likely see x number of reallocated sectors. These sectors are now mapped to the G-LIST, and reserve sectors have taken their place. This will affect performance on the tracks these sectors lie on, as the heads must seek to the reserve area to read 1 sector...

That has been standard practice for a long time. When I was a firedog (LOL). Whenever we sent a notebook in for replacement we always pulled the HDD, or backed up the system using acronis before shipping it out so we could either just throw the drive back in, or just flash the image to the...

Harddrive Defrag Strategy - Where is the outer spindle?

Ultimate Defrag is the best. Although it's circular design isn't 100% accurate as it only represents 1 side of a single platter, where your data is likely distributed throughout several platters (depending on the drive). In other defrag programs usually the top represents the "outer"...

Should I bother attempting to repair this harddrive?

I am not at liberty to give the full solution, as I am under NDA. I can tell you what you need to accomplish. You have to limit the heads from reaching that affected area, while insuring that they do not get stuck to any other area of the platters. This will need to be done in a ISO...
