We will be looking at some of the VM management aspects from an administration point of view. So if you are planning to migrate your Windows VM from an ESXi host or hypervisor to a HV, then there are a few things that we need to consider. To begin, we must install the Nutanix guest tools, which include VM mobility, on the VMs. And then we have to migrate those VMs from ESXi by performing the below procedure. So what I do is, as step one, I verify that I complete all the pre-migration tasks such as planning, assessments, gathering the information about the VMs that we want to migrate, collecting the information about how much space is required on the Nutanix cluster, looking at the configuration of the VM, all those things. Once those three migration tasks of gathering information are done, then we install the entity tools, and in these NGT tools we are also installing the VM mobility driver. This VM mobility driver is the one that will actually help us to convert and migrate the VMs from one hypervisor to another hypervisor.So this will be installed on the VMs that are running on the ESXi host. And once I have installed the NGT tools on the VMs that I am planning to migrate, then what I do is migrate the VM disc to my Acropolis storage fabric, my DSF. Now, for how I migrate, we have multiple scenarios here. One option is to create a storage container on my Nutanix cluster, whitelist the ESXi server's IP address, and mount my storage container to the ESXi server as an NFS data store. So the ESXi server will be able to see the new data store, and then I can copy the VMs. I can copy the VM discs that are there on the ESXi server to my NFS datastore, which is mounted from the Nutanix DLC. And once the copy is done, then as step four, I will convert those VM discs to AHV by importing them. So I will run an import process where I will import the VM disc to my Acropolis hypervisor, and after the import is completed, I will create a new Windows VM which will be an empty VM without the disk. So I will not attach any disc to my Windows VM that I am creating on AHV. Once the new VM is created, then I will attach the disc that I have imported from the ESXi server and, once the attachment is complete, I can power on the VMs on the HP hypervisor. This is one way of doing it. The other option is if I am migrating Linux VMs from ESXi to AHV, then what I need to do, depending on what type of Linux version I have, whether I am using Ubuntu or Susan Linux PM, is to install the NGT tools, and those NGT tools will contain the VM mobility driver. So first I will prepare the VM for migration by installing the NGT tool and mounting that entity tool on the Linux machine. And also, I would check that the Virtue IO drivers are also installed. So these Virtue IO drivers will actually help me to get the disc drivers, the racecar drivers, all those things in place. In the second step, I will go to my Prism console. I will go to my Prism console and I will add the source hypervisor host's IP address as the target for my file system whitelist. So here I am not importing the disk, I am adding the ESXi hypervisor as a whitelist so that the ESXi hypervisor will be able to access my storage container. Then what I can do is use the VMware VSphere storage motion feature to migrate the VM disc image to a Capella storage container. And when I have whitelisted the ESXi host, I am also going to create a storage container that will be mounted as an NFS data store on the ESXi host. Then I can directly create the VM, and I can attach the imported disc image to the Linux VM. And then I can proceed with powering on the VMs, and I can log into the VM console. And if needed, optionally, I can uninstall the VM tools as well. Since the VMs are now running on a cropless hypervisor, I can uninstall the VM tools because the NT tools will take care of all the drivers and the management of the VM. These scenarios are good if you have a few VMs. So you can mount the data store to the ESXi server, and you can copy the files and migrate them. But in some scenarios, you might have thousands of VMs that you plan to migrate. So what Nutanix has done is come up with a tool known as Extract that can actually help us automate the migration of virtual machines from one hypervisor to another hypervisor.This tool is also useful for cloud migrations as well. So you can migrate your entire virtual machine and any databases that are running on them. And this tool will use two approaches for performing the migration. One is that we can have VM automation. That means I can do a "lift and shift" migration. So I don't need to worry about the configuration, the operating system, the NGT tools, and all those things. I don't need to worry about whitelisting my ESXi server; mounting the NFS as a data store to the ESXi server is not required. The tool will lift the VMs from the ESXi server, and they will shift them, meaning they will migrate them with all the configuration information and the disc to my Acropolis hypervisor. The next approach is that I can also use this for DB migrations as a full instance at the application level as well. So this tool is not only useful for VM migration, but you can also use it for database migrations as well. I have a small demo link here; I will share that with you, and it is already there. So if you look at this link here, it is Nutanix.com products, tools, and technologies, and then you have an extract. So if you go to this link directly, you will be able to look at a quick demo of how extract is useful in terms of migration. Let us look at some of the features of this extract tool. I can perform "one-click simplicity" migrations. I can perform a near-zero application or VM service outage with full cutover control, so I can actually monitor the progress of the VM migration, and I can take a call once I know that the VM has 100% fully migrated and replicated to the Aqua police supervisor, then I can do a cut over.So this tool can actually power off my VM on the ESXi host, and it can power on the VM on the EHV hypervisor as well. So this way, I don't need to worry about any manual intervention, and I don't need to involve personnel or the respective database administrators or system administrators to power on or have an interaction. I can also enable migration testing. So before migration, if you want to do a migration test to verify how the migration will happen and whether you have enough space and resources available on your destination cluster, then you can also do a migration test. It is cost-efficient as the licences are included with all Nutanix software editions. So you can actually since you already have a nutanixcluster running or you are going to deploy that nutanixcluster, you will be able to download this tool fromyour support portal and you can deploy this tool inyour environment and you can start migrating your VM. There are some updates to this tool, and I can see the updates are coming on a weekly or monthly basis from Nutanix, where they are trying to make this tool compatible with more and more technologies and more and more cloud platforms as well. In this slide, let us look at a release of an extract where Mutanics is going to add support to Amazon Web Services as a source. VM migration from the public cloud to an on-premises mechanics club So if you are already running some VMs in your public cloud and if you are planning to migrate those VMs to your on-premises environment, your Nutanix cluster will also form a cloud platform. So you can migrate those from your AWS cloud to the on-premises AHP hypervisor as well. Or you can also migrate from your on-premises VMware to AHB as well.So how does the migration work? What I need to do is once I install the tool in my environment, I open the management interface of the tool, and then I start adding the source. So here I will select my source as AWS. Then I have to give my source name. What is the source name that I am using in my AWS environment? I need to give you the access key. I need to give you the secret access key so that the extract tool can connect to your Amazon account. Once connected to your Amazon account, it will display the information that you are connected to an AWS cloud provider. And you will be able to see that it is actually looking at ten regions because most cloud providers have LRS and DRS, the local redundancy and the global redundancy, respectively. So depending on where your VMs are running and how many VMs are running in your account, you will be able to look at that information. You can add multiple sorts if you want to add them at the same time. And then you can configure your target environment. So your target will be your Acropolis hypervisor. Then you can configure your Prism element so that you can communicate with your cluster. And once you have added these details—the source and target—then you can start looking at your details. So you'll be able to see the different information that is available on your target, and you'll be able to see your Nutanix cluster. And then you can have the option of saving it as a project. So you don't want to start it immediately. You want to save it. Or you can save and start the migration immediately. When you are migrating your VMs from the cloud, you might have set up some freelance or virtual private networks for your VMs, right? different naming conventions and different attributes for your network. So you can also do a network mapping so that similar network mappings, similar VCTs, can be created in your VLAN as well. so you can also do a network mapping. So I will say that this is my network mapping on the source network, and I want to have it as a VLAN zero on my mechanics cluster. So this way you will be able to maintain all your configurations, regulations, and settings.
So let us start with this new feature of the Acropolis operating system, Five One. So in this release, Nutanix has added some major features and introduced some major security network-related features, some with performance implications for large databases. So how can we accommodate the large databases with volume groups and also a load balancer option on a hypervisor? Also, they have introduced a feature where we can deploy two node clusters. Now, so earlier we had the option of implementing a single node or a three-node cluster, but now we can actually go with a two-node cluster as well in case you have a small customer or you have remote offices—those kinds of things. Also, they have made some enhancements in terms of Prison Central. Earlier, the Prison Center was installed as a single VM, and it was able to manage multicluster. But now you can also install Prison Central in a scale-out architecture where multiple prison centres can run, and they are able to manage huge clusters. We are talking about 100 or 200 clusters that can be managed not with a single PrisonCenter but with multiple prison sentence instances that are configured in a repository, a kind of scenario where you can use that feature as well. Also, they have introduced the Rest API, version three. As we discussed yesterday or last day, we were talking about versions one and two. They have increased the support for the per-node capacity to 80 terabytes now that they have added the guest OS shutdown operation for Aquapolis Hypervisor. So there was a power off and a power cycle option earlier, wasn't there? Now they have added the guest VMOS shutdown operation to Aquacult Hyperbon. Plus, they have done some enhancements for the LSU coding where we are able to update the LSW coding with in-place place override.So if any block or data is updated, we can also now perform an in-place override to utilise the storage in a much better way in terms of usable capacity. One of the most significant announcements has been the Acapulco Five services. They have released version three, and this version now has NFS support. It also provides a CFP backup feature, and you can also deploy it as an active deployment. And you can also enable the file auditing feature as well, so that you can have a full-blown file server that can be used as a kind of person. Let us go ahead and see them one by one and try to look at what the new features are and how they can complement and make our cluster more advanced. The first section we will be looking at is the security updates. So in security updates they have introduced "micro segmentation," where we are able to create application-centric network security. That is, the open V switch concept in Aeropolis Hypervisor was replaced by software-defined networking. Now it has a statewide distributed firewall where we can use micro administration and define different VMs, and we are able to create the VMs in a workflow manner. In addition, they have introduced a service insertion and chaining option, which allows me to chain multiple VMs with each other while adhering to the PCI DSS security guidelines. Also, network automation is introduced, which is also known as "flow," and we can use this flow to automate a lot of network automation tasks, and we can also have micro segmentation on the cluster level. This LDM also provides application and VM communication visualization. So I can understand from an application point of view which application is talking to which database in the background and what type of code it is using, and how we can restrict access to that application or database, or how we can harden the security between one application and the database as well. You can also have third-party integration, where you can integrate third-party security orchestra software, and you can create both scenarios as well. So what are the benefits that we are getting with these new features? We can have a simple application-centric policy model with LCN, software-defined networking, where I can create a policy for my application and define which applications can talk to which databases and what all the dependencies are. For example, if I have a website or an ecommerce portal, I can map that ecommerce web portal to an application, and that application can in turn be mapped to multiple database servers so that the ecommerce can pull out the data from different servers based on the requirements. We don't need to install anything extra; it is ready to run, and we are able to get new roof security with the help of granular. Application isolation I can use zoning without a VLAN or without physical network configuration. If I use virtual desktop as my application or environment in the mechanics cluster, I can also have the VDI, and I can isolate the VDI as well. We can also quarantine the data or the VM. So if any vehicle is affected, corrupted, or infected by any version, we can quarantine that VM. And with the network automation tool, we can have switch automation where we can also create VLAN versions. We can have load balancing pool management as well, so we can have a VLAN. So if you have created multiple VLANs, and if any of the VLANs are not active or not being used by any of the services, then we can also hurt them depending on certain Also, for load balancer pool management, we can have a load balancer where we can balance the LTE between different villages like we have seen earlier. We were able to create LP networks where we were able to assign an IP pool, and the assignment of it was automatically done for the virtual machine. The next section is about some additional core data paths and a component hypervisor update. So in this section, one of the main enhancements that we've made is the volume boost. They have a load balancing feature with the volume boost. So irrespective of whether the volume discs are coming from different nodes, the VM will be able to load balance them so that you can get better throughput. So let's say I have a cluster of three nodes, and if the disc is created on or has a local disc on one of the nodes, the client can actually talk to all three nodes as three different storage controllers. So the throughput of the access, or the throughput of the IOPS, and latency are reduced since all the nodes are able to participate as a load balancer for providing access to the volume group. So we are able to use the Nutanix Cluster to upscale our application needs. So if my application needs bigger volume groups or a bigger disc, I can span them across the mode. I can also get the disc automatically spread across multiple nodes so that I can take advantage of all the node's resources. I can also leverage multiple CVMs to obtain multiple iOS and improve my support. I can also configure it as a round-robin methodology. So irrespective of where the disc is deciding, whether the disc is deciding locally on load one or node two, I will be able to use it as a round robin methodology, and I can use the DSF to access the disc in a volume group with a much better throughput. So with the help of this volume group loadbalancer feature, we are able to increase the throughput. Also, we are allowing the cluster to scale out the architecture. So the more number of nodes and the serum that Iadd in my ten x cluster I am going to geta better performance for my volume group load balancer. One of the use cases that we can map to this volume grip load balancer is a large database or a high-performance application that needs lots of IO. The other feature is having a one- or two-node Nutanix cluster on a branch or a remote orchestra. So now we can have a remote branch or edge platform option. I can have a one-node cluster that is mainly targeted for approximately five VMs, or I can have a two-node cluster that is positioned at a five- to ten-millimeter angle so that we can get node-level redundancy in the one node. We are not getting load level redundancy, but we will get disc level redundancy. So if one disc fails, we have the other disc group continue the operation. Primarily, if you are looking for one node or two nodes, then you should go for a five to ten VM kind of scenario for production, and it also supports cross-hypervisor VR between the remote sites and the data center. So I can have a single node or two nodes on my remote site, and I can replicate the data from there to my main mutant expressor, which can run the native Acropolis hypervisor or it can also run the PSSI hypervisor. So I am able to do close hypervisor replication between you. The benefit of this is that we are getting a cost-effective solution for small offices or use cases. I can have the entire deployment managed by a common platform such as Prism Central. I can manage all the remote site clusters using the prison centre while sitting in the head office. I can also schedule an upgrade for the remote site so that I can upgrade all of the clusters on the remote site from a central location. I can have global reclamation so that I can review the main data centre capacity usage. And the use case for this remote robot deployment is a federal or oil-rig retail showroom or shopping mall. Alternatively, I can consider Clinks, which is part of the Australia sector and needs to update their daily transactions or daily data that is generated to the head office as a backup copy, a compliance copy, or an auditor long-term copy. The next thing is that you have upgraded the capacity support for all nodes to 80 terabytes. And as you knew earlier, you can have any number of nodes in a cluster. There is no limit on the number of clusters. The only limit on the number of clusters is based on the licence type. So if you are using the starter license, then you can have a twelve-node cluster. But if you are using the Pro or Alternate License, you can have an unlimited number of nodes in the cluster, and now they have increased the capacity for each node to 80 terabytes. So more and more customers started going for the rack servers, where they are able to attach more and more disc shelves to the rack servers, and they are looking for more and more capacity per month. So this actually allows them to scale up in terms of capacity, so that you are able to increase your storage scenario. So earlier we discussed having a compute sellout and storage failure, right? So compute tell out is basically us adding nodes to the cluster, and storage tail out is adding more members of this to the node so that we can get more capacity in the classroom. The use cases are if you are planning for a backup, if you're looking for a local backup of your remote size, or if you're looking for expansion for your Azure phone file services. So if you're looking for a file service that can span petabytes of storage with a single namespace, then you can use Nutanix as one of your platforms as well. They have introduced this small update, which is a guest shutdown option, which was not available in previous versions of a hypervisor. So now you have the capability to execute a user-defined shutdown script to reboot or shut down the rest of the system from the Prism or from the API. So if you are using the Rest API, or if you are using the Prism element of Prison Sentencer, you will be able to perform a user-defined option. This is only available for Hypervisor, and it requires at least the entity version at least.One, two, one. What is the benefit of this feature? to ensure a clean shutdown of the application and to make sure that the state of the VM is being changed to power up while doing a graceful shutdown. In terms of eraser coding, they have come up with a new in-place upgrade feature. So in this place, write or update the errorshore coding by completing the updated parity information. So they are able to look up the parity information andthey are able to update the ratio code by overwriting andin place data so that they are not having lot ofgarbage collection or not lot of blocks are fragmented. It will give us a benefit in terms of increasing the storage efficiency because we are reducing the data, we are not keeping more copies of the data, and we have lower garbage collection. The number of background jobs will also decrease. So primarily, the performance of initial coding will also increase with the new version. So basically, customers who are using the ETF will now benefit from this new technique of data reduction. The next section is about the Prism Update. So they have done an update for Prism Central. Now the prism can be used as a scale for architecture. Previously, we would deploy one presentcentral and manage multiple clusters. Now that the number of clusters is increasing, it has also increased the architecture. Or we can deploy multiple prison central VMs. Furthermore, these prison central VMs can manage multiple VMs or clusters from a single interface. You can also see that they have added new features, such as.com and Flow, which is a software-defined enforcement feature in Prison Sentence. And I can create a microsegmentation policy using this flow directly from my Prism center. So using multiple prison centres will give me a resilient and distributed control panel, which is supported by the PSI. So the benefit that I get is that I am able to do more one-click deployments with simplicity across multiple clusters. Since this is a scale-out architecture, the Prism element VMs are maintaining a distributed architecture, and they can scale up to 25,000 VMs or less than 60 clusters. So that's a quite large number in terms of managing clusters. The next update is the V 30 API. So if you're looking at the Rest API, you will be able to customise and automate a lot of things. Now you can go to the developer mechanics.com site, where you'll be able to look at the APIs, and you will be able to use those APIs. You will be able to access the tutorials on how to use the API with various rest clients. You can have an integrated API where you can do self-service programming; you can also have Prison Central as an integrated offering. You can manage your virtual infrastructure as well. You can also create security based on roles or project membership. So in Newton, there is a feature called Self-Service. where different IT teams can actually use the self-service portal to deploy their VM based on the permissions and resources that we allocate for a certain project. So if I have a project for deploying a SQL database VM, then I can deploy certain resources and certain capacity so that the SQL database administrators can deploy their own VM and use those resources that are allocated to the volume. This API also now has the micro-segmentation features that are provided by the company's product called Flow. So we can take advantage of this microsegmentation, and we can also integrate Rest APIs for securing the cluster and automating the Active. The next update is related to the Aquaponics file system. They have added NFS version four support for the ASL. Now we will be able to support clients that are running NFS version four in addition to assembly 20 and two one-amp systems. And we can have a single file server that can support both SMD and NFL shares. So that means I can configure a new security style in Acropolis file server, and we can configure it for both Unix and Windows clients. Since it supports NFS, you can also use it for migration with DSXI. If you want to migrate, you can whitelist your DSXI host IP address in Nutanix, you can launch the NFS and export to the EX site, and you can use the migration plan as well. The next feature is incremental file backup support. So if you are looking for the TFP backup, the TFT backup is primarily used if you create a backup where the change file backup-based backup methodology is used. Most of the backup software, such as Net Backup Combo, has this feature of looking at the Windows journal or the Unix tracking file to see which files are changed. So whenever a backup server wants to take a backup of mechanic cluster data residing on the DSS, they can actually request a change list of files, and then mechanics will send them the list of files that have changed since the last backup. And then the backup server can read the data of only the change files, and then it can write the view files into the target as part of its backup device or display. So this TFT-based backup is a good feature for performing incremental backups; for most vendors nowadays, they are performing incremental backups forever. So you can use that, or you can combine it with synthetic full backup, in which we refer to the previous pull and consolidate the incremental so that we have a simple and efficient backup and no scan is required for the file server to perform incremental backup. So we will be able to avoid scanning cases during a backup operation and get a ready list from the Nutanix cluster to the backup server, where it will identify which files we have changed since the last backup. So this way, we are also able to reduce our backup window and take backups in a more efficient way. The next thing is active, active deployment and file auditing for file services. So now we can configure active AFS clusters at each site with independent namespaces. So both the clusters will work as two different namespaces, and they can still work as "active." We can also have a partnership with the peering software so that we can peer with them to get the file collaboration and manage that. The benefit of this is we can have a project file replica maintained in real time across multiple sites, so I can keep the project files or the replication in a synchronic manner, where I will be able to use the built-in replication mechanics. Also, we can keep them geographically dispersed so that the teams can get local access to their project file replica. So the global team from various countries does not need to share their files over the Internet, or they did not share their files into your network. They can actually use the application technology to replicate the data and keep a local access copy for accessing those files. At the same time, we can also enable the file auditing feature so that we know which users have edited the file or deleted the file. You can have an external block to maintain your audit information. And there are some discussions with some leading corporate governance and auditing vendors to integrate this as a feature as well. some final thoughts before we come to the conclusion of this session. Some new features are microsegmentation, which is a security-related feature. We can build prisons on a smaller scale. Now we have support for Rest API version three. And we have a proposal for File Service version three, which supports NFS version four and SMB as well.
