I'd bag them if they're in a basement with a furnace due to the ozone. Aside that and direct sunshine they should last 10+ years easily. I keep mine in a couple contractor trash bags.
The card should hit 80C and start throttling I believe, so it should be as-designed if that is what you are seeing.
The only way I've found to prevent it from hitting 80C is to put a case fan in the door, pointing at the card. I max out around 75C with that configuration. Even leaving the case...
