5.8 will not make that distance through obstructions. 900Mhz will, and 2.4G has a good chance. 900mhz will not get you a 50M link, and 2.4 probably will not either, since you will lose a lot of signal due to obstructions. You are probably looking at an effective speed of about 10M with 2.4

32-bit Office vs. 64-bit Office

Cisco SOHO

If you want to try to learn something useful, try getting any of their small router line or go with a ASA series router/firewall. All of these are going to be more than the SOHO series, but you can find them pretty cheap used sometimes.

Quick PBX question. Are the processors swappable? Ours got fried

I work on Panasonic PBX systems, and a PRI card alone (for a digital circuit) has a MSRP of almost $2k. It is pretty crazy how expensive a business class phone system costs. I can say that the only time I have ever lost hardware is from power and surge issues!

The only way two antennas would be better is if it is a "N" wireless AP and it is using MIMO. Otherwise, if you want more distance, go with a slightly higher db antenna. I think the default antennas are 3dbi, so a 6dbi antenna would give you twice the total output. Say your AP puts out...

How to find out an IP address of a machine?

Most devices will have the MAC address printed on it somewhere. Try using arping to see what the mac address gives back.

Need Cisco guru - screwed up 871 router

Yep. Just the fact that you are seeing gibberish means that there is still something left of the router software. Resetting it should have set it back to 9600/8/N/1 though, if it is like the 2600 series.

Hyper-V

Hmm, I have two Hyper-V R2 clusters and I would have to say it is definetly not "crap". So far my uptime is only limited to how often I want to install security updates (around once a month). Works great for me, since I can shut any of the host machines down at any given time with no downtime...

I have tried to go to Las Vegas but never have been able to swing that. Dallas is closer and doesn't have the same "I am going on a boondoggle" vibe. Bootcamps are fun if you take the time to talk to the other guys in the class. Plus, it is the only way I can find time to study anything...
