IBM hard drive question

I have a 60GXP and I'm still a little unsure of the quality. It used to fail the DFT, but I just ran it again yesterday and it passed. Not sure whether the bad sectors have just been remapped.

Ohh my! Tomshardware tests real P4 2.53 and 2.66GHz with 533FSB!

Looks to me like the 1.6A or 1.8A should provide similar price / performance to an Athlon XP for the overclockers out there. Especially with RDRAM costing similar amounts to DDR (unlike Tom I see little evidence that the prices are equal yet) I think I'd be tempted on a P4 for my next upgrade.

Wow! Impressive speeds for certain. Anyone know how much PC800 RAMBUS can reach PC1066? No overclockers vendors are selling any guaranteed stuff, maybe a market for it could be emerging? With that, the performances shown there would be pretty easily achieveable for something like the 1.8A...

What's the fuss? P4 1.6 o/c'ed to 2.3 still probably not faster than comparably priced AthlonXP

The other thing to remember is that with a higher FSB, a 1.6A overclocked to 2.2 will actually perform better than a real 2.2 GHz P4. Also with some newer P4 motherboards you can get the PCI and AGP buses locked at default speed, so it should be very easy to get the FSB upto 150-160 MHz.

Hmm, you seem to have forgotten the fact that the new motherboard is DDR based. There's little point IMO not getting a DDR motherboard since it'll give a decent performance boost. But adding the cost of at least 256mb PC2100 on to the price for the new motherboard and CPU, it may change how...

Is it bad to decrease the voltage?

You'll get lower power usage as well from lower voltages. This is the same thing that Intel does with mobile chips anyway, so it's perfectly safe - some of them run on I think 1.1V

Is it just me or has he already got a SB Live! in the specs. It's not the latest one anymore but that means that the cost has dropped substantially and it's still 95% as good as the best out there.

Is the Samsung 700NF as highly respected around here as the 900NF?

I'm confused here. The 900NF seems to only be able to do 1600x1200 according to Samsung's website. That puts it in the low/mid range of 19" monitors, and I suppose flat screen and pic quality make it a proper mid range monitor. Why is it so good?

19" Monitor: Viewsonic PF790 or p95f

How about the Iiyama VM Pro 454? In the UK at least, it's cheaper than the P95F, and it's got an incredible 345 MHz dot clock, allowing 1800x1440 at 85 Hz, or more useably 1600x1200 @ 100 Hz. Unfortunately I've not seen reviews yet, but I have yet to see a bad Iiyama monitor.

If it were me, I'd get a cordless keyboard and mouse - my Logitech iTouch combo is one of the best things I've bought, and there's not many components which get to 18 months old and are still pretty much as good as you can get. For the hard disc, I'd be tempted on a 60 GB drive if your budget...
