I recently had one installed, with copper piping. I'm terrible at sealing joints by saudering, so I paid to have someone professionally do it. It's not terribly expensive of a procedure...so if you want to save yourself the time of doing it, pay for it.
1000sqft, I imagine this is a 1 story? Ice dams mainly happen because of snow melt refreezing. Reduce the snow, reduce the refreeze. You could probably do something like this

As far as I know, my house is listed/insured as if it has an actual fireplace.

Im getting an estimate done on my chimney to convert it to a wood burning stove insert. Its like a 35-40ft chimney and is free of needed repairs. just a new liner needed
what do you think the budget range is to drop in a liner and install a nice stove insert?
I live in an older home that has fairly recent updates on the interior. Grounded romex throughout, some plumbing upgrades...but the main sewer lines are still cast iron and lateral line is clay.

Make sure you have enough tiles to still do the job after you break a few. If you never cut a tile before, I'm sure you will damage several while trying to do it right. Also, it's not that hard, just be patient :)
It's pretty foolproof, just follow the instructions and make sure you leave...
