Did you boot from the C drive that you were trying to format? Make a startup disk and boot from that, then try to format the C drive from the A drive. (Or the ramdisk it makes, depending on which operating system you're using.) It should proceed with the format without any problem. ax57

Alternative Word Processor to Microsoft Word?

I'd highly recommend "Staroffice 5.2". It's a free office suite that is compatible with MS Office file formats. (Word, Excel, etc.) Here's a link where you can download it but I hope you have broadband, it's nearly 100 MB. Download "Staroffice 5.2"

windows has detected a registry/configuration error!

Bad RAM will cause the problem you're describing. Try either reseating the RAM or substitute some different RAM to see if that fixes the problem. If there's a heavy accumulation of dust in the SIMM slots you might want to vauum that out too.

Can I shorten my ATA-100 Rounded cable...

I've shortened them without experiencing any problems. The trick is to get a good, clean cut. The best tool I've found for the job is the Craftsman "Handi-Cut".
