DVD+R in a DVD player

Yes if you burn with DVD-ROM book type there is a good chance that your Toshiba player will accept the DVD+Rs. You can find firmwares here, 2.F8 seems to be the latest with bitsetting support.

DVD+ vs. -

First, Panasonic is not a +RW company, on the contrary it has been one of biggest anti +RW companies very late with adding support for writing DVD+R/RW to its DVD burners and intentionally blocking the format from being played on its DVD players unless they're fooled with bitsetting. I think...

what's next for DVD-RW?

Ricoh DL media is available in some parts of the world now (Asia and Europe). The same goes for Philips DL media (developed by Philips, manufactured by CMC) and Prodisc. Infomedia is also working on DL media.

8x DVD+RW is already supported by a some drives. There are rumors about even faster speeds in development (like 12x DVD+RW some time next year). 6x DVD-RW is supported by the LG GSA-4163B and most coming drives. 8x DVD+R DL should show up in late Q1 next year. 4x DVD-R DL should also show...

what's the fastest DVD DUAL LAYER drive?

The fastest drive at burning DL DVDs is Toshiba's SD-R5372 with a 5x speed or about 22 minutes for a full 8.5GB disc, see picture here.

Benq DVDRW not supported?

Do you have the bulk or the retail version? The bulk version has a G*** firmware while the retail version has a B*** firmware. Latest retail firmware (B7P9) is available here. Latest bulk firmware (G7P9) is available here.

have they come out with dual-layer dvdr drives for laptops yet?

Lite-On SOSW-852S, NEC ND-6500A and Pioneer DVR-K14 are available. Some other drives are also shipped to OEMs sold with notebooks or sold as external drives. List here.

According to some rumors the DVD+RW Alliance plans to release 8x DL specs in January and drives usually show up quite soon after specs are released (or even before). When 4x DL media is released it wouldn't surprise me if some drive manufacturers release writers that allows overspeeding to 8x...

Are DVD-/+R drive speeds real or "max"?

You can check Videphelp's list to see what a specific DVD writer uses of CAV, CLV, PCAV or ZCLV for its max speed in the different formats.

Reasonable price for DVD media?

Actually that page is filled with quite a lot crap and it's written by a guy that have showed numerous times that he really doesn't know what he's talking about. You'll find better info if you search for example CDfreaks.com's media forum.

Multi-Speed DVD-R

2.4x is for DVD+R/RW only. It's not that you try to burn a DVD-R on a burner that only supports DVD+R/RW is it?
