^ RAID1 is not protection against data corruption. It only provides hardware redundancy, allowing continuous up-time should one of the drives in the RAID1 array fail.
^ Kudos for being willing to try your first build (& you'll receive encouragement & advice here if that's the way you go), but starting out on a tight budget can make it a frustrating experience for a first-timer (not being to get the items you'd like). And it's hard to beat the mass production...
Build now if you need it now. But if it is solely for unreleased titles, then build it as close as possible to release date when more is known about how thesoftware performances on different hardware, & when price/performance for your budget will be better.
^ Agreed - 8GB is nice if you have the money to buy it up front (prices on DDR3 are pretty good currently) but 4GB should be plenty for general gaming.
5 hours with Memtest isn't very long when you have 8GB to test. Have you tried just 2x2GB at a time?
Any particular game causing this? Gaming is different to stress-tests.
