Odd XP/SATA Drive Issues

MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION error

Just tried installing on a hard drive I *know* is good, and I still get the MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION blue screen. That leaves the only part I haven't switched out to be the CPU, although I guess it's possible this is some sort of conflict between the motherboard and the memory or something...

This was something I had thought of, and I ran a full chkdsk /f on the drive and it came out fine. Even so, it's entirely possible this HD is failing -- I'm going to try and see if I can install windows on a new HD today. If I get the same error, I'll know it's not the HD.

Seemingly random reboots - how to diagnose a hardware issue?

Thanks for the replies so far guys. I had completely forgotten memtest even existed. I just finished running it and it passed with 0 errors, so I guess it might not be my memory. I also unchecked the auto-restart on system-failure you suggested Gentle -- hopefully now I can capture more...

Seemingly random reboots - how to diagnose a hardware issue?

Recently, (ever since returning to school from winter break), my computer has been acting up. Occasionally (between once a week and 3 times a day) it will just restart itself. It only happens when I'm at the computer or the computer is doing something, but it seems not to be related to any one...

HD trouble: The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable
