Is an Anti-Static Wristband necessary?

As long as you touch the power supply every once in awhile, you should be good. I've never used those dorky looking wristbands and have never had a problem.

WD hard drives...any good?

I love my WD drives. Last 3 drives I bought have all been WD's. Before them, I used primarily Seagate and IBM, but now WD all the way.

WTF? Notepad trying to contact the Internet

Install Microsoft AntiSpyware and scan your system. Also the free AVG virus scanner. Between those two, you should be able to get your system cleaned up.

Bad Hard Drives: What to do with them?

You could degauss the drive by running it over a powerful magnet. Otherwise, removing the platters and incinerating / pulverizing is probably the safest and most effective solution.

Movie backup question for friend in Costo Rica

I think they make some DVD player / DVD Burner for your living room, but they don't have anything to do with computers. However, due to the encryption on 99% of DVD's, this probably would not work for making backups of his DVD's (not sure though, so it still might be worth looking into). Also...

ATI MMC issues

I have recently installed the ATI MMC 9.08 software, in addition to the Catalyst 5.5 video drivers on my AIW 9800. Everything seems to be working okay, but I am getting some wierd violet colored numbers in the top right hand corner of the screen. It looks like a readout of the frames per second...

how many computers do you have?

Had 8, but gave two away to my family, so now I have 6, 2 of which are laptops and the other 4 are desktops, ranging from P3 500 up to an Athlon 64 3000+ (and some Pentium 4's in there too).

Why the step back to LCD's?

My 20.1" LCD is the equivelent of 22" CRT, in terms of screen size, and I paid a very reasonable amount (around 600 w/ shipping and tax). Also, I get no eye strain or any other problems with my LCD, and I use it a minimum of 10 hours a day. Lastly, my LCD runs very cool compared to a CRT, and...

My brother in law recently bought a Dell 2200 for about 1,100 and it is pretty nice. It has a 1.6 Pentium M, 512MB RAM, 60GB HD, DVD Burner, 15 in screen and the keyboard is a nice size for typing. You will get between 3 1/2 to 4 hours battery life, and you can also buy an extra battery for...

"Turn off hard disks" in Power Options

Agree with others. I never let my drives be turned off by power management. About the only thing that's good for is the monitor. If you have a laptop though, and want to conserve battery life, that may be the only time you ever let the power management turn anything off besides your monitor.

Pagefile location?

I usually setup my page file on my 2nd drive, in your case, the data drive. However, if you are really worried about it, why not just create a page file on both?
