Opening it up definetly trashed it, you could have tried the freezer trick, but i dont think that will help now, time for a new drive

Problem Detecting Hard Drive at Correct UDMA

I have seen in the past on WD that you can set it to be a udma33, i had to do it one, if i remember correclty i had to use some of WD software to do it. I would look to see if there is WDDiag software that will allow you to check that setting. Doesnt really sound like the case, i had to do...
