Poll: Windows Whistler (2296) - Who's got more experience??

You shouldn't see any major differences in Personal and Professional. They are very different though, mostly due to the fact that Personal is based off of the single processor NT kernel, while Professional has SMP support. -CamaroGuy

Whistler Pro and Personal will use the same driver sets. The main difference between the two is the kernel and some auxillary apps. Kinda like NT Workstation and Server. Personal is for single processor, stand-alone machines. This is the version most people running 95/98/ME or Win2K at home...

Whistler + Office 10 = bad idea?

Guys, don't you think it's premature to bash Office 10 and Whistler as a combination since they're still in the beta phase? I'm sure the bugs you speak of will be fixed (within the year) before both are slated for release. -CamaroGuy

Beta 1 is a fairly stable OS as compared to previous OSs beta 1 issues. The code for Professional and Adv. Server is primarly Windows 2000 (for the x86 version), and the Personal has some features derived from 95/98/ME. If you have Pro. or Adv. Server you can probably use it on your default...

Does Whistler actually phone home to Microsoft©?

No. This is a rumor. It should be dead as soon as more people install the beta. In the IA-64 version, you can configur Whistler to automatically send computer information when you submit a bug to help with the debugging process. I assume the x86 version is the same. But why should you worry...

Windows Whistler

I'm using the IA-64 version and it's okay. Just seems like Windows 2K on steriods. I haven't used the x86 version though. I kinda like the new start menu, although many people complain about it. At least MS put in the option to revert to the "classic" design. -CamaroGuy

It's only legally availble to public beta testers, people with MSDN subscriptions, and various others in the business. Although I'm not going to advocate it, many people get copies from public servers around the net. It just takes one guy to break his NDA and copy the CD or post an ISO image...

Isn't there a DVD player in winME?

I guess I was wrong on the Media Player--sorry. I found DVDPLAY.EXE, but it wouldn't play any of my disks. I have a 3rd generation Toshiba DVD-ROM, but no hardware decoder. Maybe I have to have a hardware decoder to use the MS DVD player; I don't know. I'll stick to PowerDVD. -CamaroGuy
