SANs Vs. Traditional File Servers

One other thing that I haven't seen mentioned yet.....are all the drives hot-swappable? If not then when a drive dies (and trust me, they WILL! =)) you'll have to shut down the machine, crack the case, and replace it. I'm just assuming that with 2TB of data that isn't something you would like...

Gigabit NICs

One machine is a RAID0, the other is a Seagate X15-36LP 15k scsi drive, so throughput should be pretty good. I'm also using throuput testing programs as opposed to copying files and timing it. I still think it's a nic issue. Thanks for the comments.

Gigabit NICs

I should have given more info! Currently the nics are in my home machines (each is a 1.7Ghz machine) and I have been using netcps to test. It maxes out at 20MB/sec which works out to be somewhere around 160Mbps. File transfers using windows give about the same results. I've run them through...

3Com NICs gone Wild

Are you using load balancing software or anything? Cause if you just plug 2 nics in you're gonna have a big traffic mess because your computer will effectively have 2 MAC addresses and computers will not know how to communicate with it. Unplug one and things should work right.

Bandwidth 4912g

The Cisco 4912G has 12 GBIC ports and has "24 Gbps of dedicated bandwidth" according to the Cisco site. This is not a modular switch, so you would not be able to change that.

Cisco Errors

Direct gigabit crossover connection ?

ScottMac- What's your insight into that pinout on Cisco's site for the gigabit and gigabit x-over cables? Wouldn't "regular" gigabit use the standard tia568b pinouts? wo,o,wg,b,wb,g,wbr,br....if you follow Cisco's site you get: wo,o,wg,g,b,wb,wbr,br...is this the gigabit standard, and if so...

Cisco 3550 Inter-VLAN Routing

So, by simply creating the VLAN and creating an SVI for each VLAN, I should be good to go? Thanks.

Cisco 3550 Inter-VLAN Routing

How do I configure my new Cisco Catalyst 3550-24 (with the EMI) to do Inter-VLAN routing? In the documentation I find info about unicast and multicast routing, but nothing about intervlan routing. Is this the same as fallback bridging? Thanks!

802.1q over VPN

I've got 2 sites with Cisco Catalyst 2950 switches setup with 2 vlans. I've got a Cisco PIX 501 at each site that I am going to configure to do a site to site vpn. If I assign multiple vlans to the port attached to the PIX can I pass both vlans across the vpn, or is there a way to allow 802.1q...

synconize and automatic backup folder in home lan under win2k?

Move the My Documents folder to a location and share it, then on your My Documents folder (on ALL the 2k machines) right click, go to properties and select move. Then browse to the shared My Documents that you want to use. Then everytime you go into the documents it should come up to that...

2k WINS problems
