You can still go the 'cheap route' and get DDR if you get an ECS board. The kids are probably going to want to play games and I wouldn't skimp too much on performance.

Although I doubt it because you've only been having crashes in XP, it could be a failing stick of memory. I had random crashes in XP as well, ran Memtest, then replaced the bad stick and everything was smooth and stable after that.

Have you opened up the case and made sure the speaker is actually connected? Before you assume anything is dead you should try reseating the video card and RAM and clearing the CMOS.
