I have the same problem as the OP. I haven't found any solution, but what I have found works is pressing the reset button a couple seconds after powering on. It boots up without giving the "Overclock failed" message.
He's not saying people shouldn't modify their 7900GT's, he's just suggesting the hidden costs of doing it make it a better value to just spend an extra $20 more for the better card (X1900) and keep the warranty.

I'd check out your clock speeds while running 3D apps. My X1900 XT wasn't changing automatically, until I unlocked ATI Overdrive and selected the preserve at logon option.
If there's a disadvantage... I'm using one right now, and can't see one. Maybe the extra cost? I love mine.
I think they get overlooked here because many here like larger monitors than what I've seen the glossy screen offered on.
I haven't experienced any artifacts yet with my eVGA 7800GT, and it's still using the original BIOS. The only panic I had was with a glitch in the second part of 3DMark05 which I found out was caused by a beta driver.
