ECS- a growing company

I used to think ECS was decent... My K7S5A ran fine for a year and a half, until a recent lightning storm caused a power surge. My screen froze, then went blank as though no signal was coming from the video card. I powered off the computer, took off the side case panel to ahve a look inside...

Samsung 955DF vs Viewsonic E90F

The North American equivalent to the 959NF is the 900NF. Unfortunately, it seems the 900NF is being discontinued, but you can still find in a few places if you look around. I got mine from NCIX's Canadian outlet, and it seems they still have it in stock.

Not enough VM to run Windows.

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=249321 I've heard of this problem before, and while KB article doesn't mention XP, the similarity between 2k and XP could mean it applies here, too. From what I've seen of others with this problem, Solution 5 (fdisk /mbr) seems to fix the problem most often...

Do I Need a Monitor with DVI?

CRTs with DVI connectors, although rare, do in fact exist, and they even make a little sense. The reason is that while CRTs require the signal to be converted to analog at some point, the later in the connection from video card -> monitor that happens, the less chance of picture degradation...

Partitions on a 160GB harddrive

There really isn't much reason to go with many partitions. In fact, I don't really understand the idea of having the OS and apps on separate partitions. I've heard people say "well, if one partition gets hosed then the other stays fine", but IME things are more likely to go wrong with the...

what is the best video player? (non Media player 9)

I use Media Player Classic. It's a WMP6.4 clone can play Realvideo and Quicktime files if RealOne and Quicktime are installed. Also, unlike WMP6.4 it can do fast seeking in ASF and WMV files.

ViewSonic P95f+ vs. Samsung 900NF

I've never seen a P95f+ in action, but I just recently got a 900NF and I can say that it is an extremely nice monitor. I had a look at a 955DF and wasn't impressed. I found text to be blurry around the edge of screen while it was fine in the center. Also, it only has an 85kHz horizontal...

CD-RW/DVD combo question

Pretty much. RPC-2 region-locks the drive itself whereas RPC-1 means regioning is only up the to the player software.

Poll: Should/will Microsoft ever drop the C:\ and just go with directories?

Actually, there's nothing technical about NTFS that allows it. It's a decision on Microsoft's part to only allow that with NTFS. In Linux I can mount any partition type as a subdirectory of any partition type, regardless if it's FAT32, NTFS, ext2/3. XFS, or any other filesystem you can think of.
