Yeah it would seem that OpenSuse has done a good job on this release.
Alot of nice features and faster package management.
There is a slight problem with the latest kernel2.6.25.5-1.1-pae and wireless
The Madwifi rpm's are out of date and/or incompatible with the latest kernel.
But...
Myself I have tried.
PCLinuxOS and Mandriva 2008
Both are very simple distro's that just seem to work. And installs pretty much everything.
Both are also live CD's so you will have a chance to see how it matches up with your system.
To install just click on the install icon on the desktop...
Get the Atheros drivers here for Suse 10.2 32 bit.
http://madwifi.org/suse/10.2/i586/
You need the top one and the other one will be the one that matches your kernel.
download the two files right click file and prompt it to install with yast.
And you should be good to go.
Nvida...
Option #2
The only thing linux isn't that good for is gaming.
K3B burning software is great.
Open Office get's you by. Price Free.
Multiple desktops
And not having to worry to much about virus.
Just for a quick look at all the distro's out there.

I'm Running Suse 64bit without any problems.
One thing that helps is making sure your hardware matches up.

Also running a couple other 32 bit distro's
I know you are asking about Ubuntu 64 bit. And I hope this doesn't confuse you.
But I have been running Suse 10.2 64 bit since it come out. "last fall"
I had no problems installing it. Except I used Firefox 32 bit Browser and flash.
Due to some of the problems Drag mentioned.
And that...
Myself I like the IBM T series laptops.
They seem to match up with Linux pretty well. The only downside is they are a little expensive.
Hp builds a good laptop and I feel Acer builds a decent laptop for the price.
You pretty much have to look at the hardware each model laptop on your list...

Sounds like Microsoft must think the GPL v3 has teeth. :)
Like was mentioned If anything would ever come of this it would be tied...
First Linux was Red Hat about 5 years ago. I was running it on a P2 350.
But I was totally lost. When I would get bored with Windows I would mess with Red Hat.
Eventually it starting getting easier.
Then next was Suse 9.3 and things started clicking with this distro.
Looking back I have come...
I find that for me Linux is a better tool for the internet I can surf and do things without worry.
I don't need to run virus protection.
I do a virus scan every couple months. Just out of habit from windows.
And have been running Linux virus free for over a year.
Try doing that with...
I know that there is some settings you can change under power management I think.
But I am not really all that familiar with Ubuntu.
Hopefully someone running Feisty Fawn will know.
I would just run Ubuntu off of the live CD to see how it matches up with the hardware on your T41.
And then install it.
But from what I have read and as stated above it should match up pretty good.
I'm running Suse 10.2 on a R40 without any problems.
I think most of the ThinkPads match up...
A lot of people uses G parted live CD. It's free. And pretty easy to use.
But as always backup your drive before trying to do something major.
I image that Ubuntu would also be able to partition your drive for you,
Are you planning on installing 7.04 feisty fawn? It is suppose to work...
