So I've had a bout of nostalgia and I'm trying to throw some spare components together to build a system that'll run windows 98/xp like it's 2001. ;) Army Men (1998) or Commandoes : behind enemy lines (1998) anyone? Anyway, I'm missing an IDE optical drive. Anyone local (Dallas, TX)...

It may or may not work.. just depends on performance of the firewire chipset. I tried to use an external usb2.0 drive for the buffer, and it caused issues. I've been using Beyond TV for almost 2 years now, and it works the best with internal IDE or SATA drives.

Yeah, seems like you've already come to some pretty logical conclusions. The way a given motherboard behaves with a given module varies. Your issues are most likely memory / motherboard related. Don't use auto settings for the memory and instead go into the bios and manually specify all...

AHHHHHH!! My hard drive crashed, is there anyway I can retrieve the data?

First download http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/download.htm Drive Fitness Test, either the floppy or the iso for cd. Run the quick test.. if it says your drive is failing, your looking at Professional Data Recovery Services. If it passes, you can try.. GetDataBack...

The fact that you built your own computer and cant answer this question greatly disturbs me .. :Q but i digress SATA is the TYPE of cable, SATAII is the SPEC EIDE is to SATA as ATA/100 is to SATAII understand now?

Abit NV8 (skt 754 / nf4-x / pci-express / single channel ddr) AMD Sempron (skt 754 / 64bit / 128k L2 / 2600+ 1.6GHz) XFX 6600 DDR2 pci-express total $264 budget gaming, done! ;)

Is this rig balanced?

Not to mention your Skt 939 board would be a pin short to support that processor.. Maybe Opteron Guy just wasn't paying very close attention to that detail. :D

Your old PC doesn't suck, it just not a gaming system anymore.. ;) The problem with building anything right at this moment, is AMD is in the midst of a socket change. Any day they are going to release their new socket standards, so that will make upgrading in say a year or two almost...

Wow, thanks for your words of wisdom... You think your recommendation could be any more outlandish? He is already planning on spending $300 on a video card, and $200 on a processor, but you would have him spend another $99 on his processor? that would mean he'd be spending $600 on TWO...

how can you reinstall XP on a HP laptop using the MS serial code that came with laptop?

you need the OEM verison of whatever the Product Key is for. The product key on any OEM laptop/desktop (ie Dell / HP - Compaq / IBM / Sony / Gateway) gives you legitimate access to one copy of the OS on that device. if you have access to an OEM copy of the OS (ie XP Home OEM, XP Pro OEM)...

If DFT showed even one error would you trash the drive?

here is what you should do ... don't replace it, instead go with your gut and store all your family photos, tax documents, and any other really important data on that drive.. that way when it totally dies, and you lose all your data, we can all ROFL because you thought you knew better then...

What laptop is in your mind with these factors in mind?

i'd say 90% of current consumer laptops are junk (ie VERY poorly made) ever heard anyone say anything bad about their thinkpad? and afforadble none the less.. Certified Used IBM Thinkpads
