Quad core this year from Intel?

It's a henn and egg problem. Software companies will not make apps/games for a plattform (eg quad+ cores) that does not have a big market share. CPU companies stand a better chance selling a plattform that has currently only limited advantages. Average Joes buy a lot of things they don't need...

Well, if there's no "windows only" software involved, I'd say 12" Apple Powerbook G4 (or even an iBook). Hard to beat the Apple prices for super portables...

i dont think i would mind making an entertainment center pc with one of those if it still has its low thermal output qualites :) Supposed to be around 11W max, so well within passive cooling domain if a bit of thought goes to cooler selection / case layout... BTW, they dropped 3DNow and...

Which digi-cam do you have/want?

Got a Canon A30 (basically an A40 with 1.2 MP) pretty cheap last year, just to see if a digicam is something for me. Fun and convinient, and the pic quality is pretty good as well (IMO). The usability however is really poor for anything other than automatic mode. If someone is used to even the...

No benchmarks, but according to this from c't magazine, the C3's FPU finally runs at full clock speed (instead of 1/2 as before) and the rest of the core has been redisigned as well. C't guesstimates a 10% to 15% increase in performance (at same clock speed) for standard apps.

1.2ghz Hammer benches

Edit: now with *100%* more content ;): Agreed that AMD had better hurry with the Hammer (not that they don't know that). PIV on a "800 MHz" bus with HT is way beyond Williamette (and serious inhouse competition for Itanium2). OTOH the c't benchmarks look promising IMHO. They redid the SPEC...

IBM hard drive just thrown away ???

Yup, I'd give them a few more days (and sell the drive when it comes back ;)). Might be different for the US, but for Europe there weren't many full working days between Dec. 23rd and now.

Palm m130, sony sj30, or jornada 568?

I'd get a Palm OS device, and a monochrome one (battery life...). I've played around with things like the XScale based Pocket Loox, and, while being very nice toys, "multimedia" PDAs have no advantage when it comes to the function they should perform which, IMO, is organizing.

I'd wait a while, sell the drive when it comes back, then get a Seagate or Western Digital ;). Seriously: do you think your drive got lost or something? My experience with IBM RMA (in Europe at least) is that it can take a week or two or three.

To or Not to Stick with my P3 866.

If you are feeling adventurous, you could try modding a Tualatin Celeron to work in the mobo, or get an adapter from upgradeware. No guaratee that it works, but a Celeron Tualatin 1.1A @ 1.46 GHz would be much quicker than you PIII. As has been noted, no SMP joy with the Tualtin Celeron. BTW...

Why do people buy "Apple" computers?

Absolutely agree. That's why I use an iBook -- nice machine, a great help for me. I just wanted to point out that the "ugly" PC compatible machines are working rather well for some tasks.

Need help trouble shooting comp with no power....

If it works with your PSU and doesnt with hers, seems obvious that the old PSU is broken. If you only get lights etc. when you use your PSU, try reseating all the cards, especially the vid card.

What new upgrade are you dying to get next year? You mean this year ;) ? Voice of reasons tells me not part with lots of hard earned cash only to be beta tester -- but two temptations will be hard to resist: A Hammer based system -- and this neat little toy. Good thing there's the girlfriend...
