Yeah part of the reason I was surprised by the "warranty void if screws removed" sticker was the plastic spacer.
Thanks for all the feedback I feel a bit more at ease. I too doubt it's going to break but voiding a 5 year warranty just doesn't make me feel all that great.
Just swap the port, if it doesn't boot swap back. You will probably not see much performance improvement at since the only benefits would be cache reads but at least it makes you feel fuzzy inside.
