    Grandma's budget PC (need suggestions)

No, not planning on taking it back ever. Who knows what is going to be required in 6/7 years? But I would bet grandma is going to be much better off with a P4C-3.0Ghz, compared to a Celeron 1.8!!!!! (And for less than a $100 drop-in)

    Grandma's budget PC (need suggestions)

The 2100 is the same price on www.crucial.com. Check for yourself. You guys don't get it! This system is going to last for 6 or 7 or more years!!!! I have all the components carefully selected, so all I have to do is drop in a P4C-3.xGhz CPU a couple years down the line, and BAM, I've just...

    Dual Channel?

You guys are saying that now, but what happens 6 or 7 years down the line? I'm building this system to LAST for MANY years... An initial investment in quality upgradeable components will pay off for her down the road.

    Dual Channel?

Does dual channel work if the motherboard supports it, and the memory is PC3200 (two sticks each in a seperate slot), but if the CPU is a Celeron running at 400Mhz FSB? That is, does dual channel require that the CPU is running at full 800Mhz like a P4C?

    Grandma's budget PC (need suggestions)

I already looked at Dell's prices. For $600, you get: Celeron 2.2 Ghz 256MB of 266Mhz SDRAM 5600 RPM "value" hard drive 17" CRT monitor (not a flat screen like you said) I am offering, for $362.44: Celeron 2.4Ghz 256MB of 400Mhz DDR 7200RPM Western Digital 40GB Performance hard drive...

    Grandma's budget PC (need suggestions)

If I choose an i845G mobo, then I won't be able to upgrade to a P4C 3.0Ghz when prices drop down to reasonable levels 18 months from now. The way I have it right now, all I have to do is drop in a P4C-3.0Ghz two years down the line, and I've tripled (at least) the performance for less than...

    Grandma's budget PC (need suggestions)

In my experience, 256MB just doesn't cut it. The system ends up going to virtual memory. Seems like 512MB is a minimum these days. After 6 Mozilla browser windows are opened, email program is opened, 3 Open Office documents and spreadsheets are opened, etc, etc, the system eats up memory...

    Grandma's budget PC (need suggestions)

Nope. This system will purely be for email, word processing, web browsing, etc. Just the standard grandma stuff :)

    DDR memory questions

Actually, grandma's getting Linux. The next version of Red Hat Linux, to be exact. But Linux is VERY memory hungry, so you are right that 512MB will come in handy. But check out the price difference between PC3200 and PC2100 on www.crucial.com. It's like 3 dollars cheaper. If it's just 3...
