It is not easy to that network will be infected, before few days a read an article based on networking there I read that it is not an easy task to infect Wi Fi or Wi Fi will be infected because Wi Fi access is least protected by encryption and passwords.

need help choosing a wireless adapter for my desktop .

Go with a PCI 802.11n card. It may be a good idea to buy the same make as the router. Not necessary though. Depending on where the pc is located, if it's a room or floor away from the router, pick up a directional antenna for $20-ish and point it at the router.

Why are routers getting so expensive?

TPLink do various cheap routers. I've used a few, and they've been fine. The network at work's internet runs through a £20 TPLink ADSL Router/Modem - it's more reliable than the BT Business Hub, and we don't use wireless, so the little TPLink is ideal.
