Server Recommendations

First Linux Box

I prefer openbsd.. VERY stable, and very easy to set up.. Also, build Ethereal from the ports collection (You'll need to install X), and then run it on your external interface.. You get to see LOTS of fun stuff! :)

windows NT network, can DNS names be used instead of netbios names?

using cat5e cable for telephones?

Phone pullsw can be CAT3 or higher, since they don't have NEARLY the bandwidth or NEXT req'd of 100base communications... Trust me, we have over 500 phones in my office, all CAT3 pulls.. Why do you think they still sell it? Certainly you don't think there are still people installing 10Base...

Depending upon the number of stations you have, I'd look into a Symantec VelociRaptor. It's a 1U box that can be had for ~$800 for a 40 node license. You can block anything by anything.. You can allow certain IPs to have free reign, certain IPs to only have port 80, etc, whatever you want...

There wouldn't necessarily be any DNS errors, as it's not an AD integrated zone... I assume that all the proper keys are there that I made reference to in my prior post??

Traffic Monitoring

MRTG is useful for monitoring tha AMOUNT of traffic, but if you actually want to look at the traffic, I'd use Ethereal. It's a nice open source packet analyzer (sniffer). Yes, it's been ported to Win32 for those of you that are afraid of *nix/XWindows..
