Looking for performance laptop, budget ~$1000

I'm looking for a new laptop, and have a budget of $1000 US. Currently I have an HP business notebook, the nw8240, which I really like - my only complaint being that it runs rather hot. I'm looking for something similar in functionality as a replacement, and I've sort of been out of the loop...

Looking for an external storage solution

Well the requirement of a power supply doesn't worry me - I can live without being able to carry it around school, and if take it with me while travelling, the power supply isn't fragile (I assume) and I could just pack it in a suitcase. Anyone have anything to add? Brand names to suggest...

Great, thanks for the advice. :) I'll probably go with a 3.5 inch one since 250 GB won't be enough, I think. I guess in your opinion external enclosures are entirely out of the question, then? Since they seem to be even less portable than the 3.5 inch externals... By the way, just how durable...

OK, what I'm looking for is some sort of external hard drive (maybe 500 GB or so) that I can use with my laptop while at college. I'll be going back to school in August and I have a few internal hard drives lying around here at home from computers I used to use in high school and middle school...

Any way to get disk space usage closer to file size on disk?

I'm not sure if I understand what you're asking, but have you tried defragmenting the drive?

Well, I'm sick of dealing with the lack of space. Second hard drive time.

Seagate drives are more reliable than most. I'd suggest getting a Barracuda series drive.

I'm fairly sure I have managed to destroy the master boot record of one of my hard drives, by attempting to restore a MBR backup using `dd`. The drive contained a FAT partition (Dell's standard utility partition), an NTFS partition, and about 70MB free space at the end. Is there any way for me...

Are you saying it's more likely that USB keyboards will have a diode-laced detection matrix? Perhaps the protocol is better suited to sending mass up/down events, but I don't think that the keyboard merely being USB will allow this, since it is the actual physical construction of the keypad that...

Anyone know how to use Alcohol 120? Need hlp plz

First create an image of the CD, then load it using one of Alcohol's virtual drives. Then install the game from the virtual drive. That should make the program recognize the virtual drive as the CD drive which SHOULD have the CD in it, which will actually contain the image. -fs
