Alpha 8045 and side blow/suck holes

Use a higher flow fan and have it sucking air out of the PAL8045. Alpha's tech specs show less thermal resistance when the fan is sucking air out of the heatsink rather than blowing into it. Less thermal resistance is better ;) As for your problem with intakes, I'm sure you can find creative...

PVC elbows, plexiglass, cardboard, aluminum flashing, etc... the possibilities are endless :)

Is it safe to use a gas powered air pump to clean a case?

I'm not sure if the exhaust residue is combined with the air supply... but most likely that pump has oil inside to lubricate its moving parts... most air compressors have this key problem. The problem is that when you use these pumps to clean your case, they blow a minute amount of condensation...

ATI R300 Thermal Shim Problems?

That's why you lap very carefully with a high-grade sand paper. It's been done. The VPU is just like recent AMD and older P3 CPUs. They have a thin epoxy coating over them that somewhat protects them. You Anandtech guys are not ard enough :)

Is the heatsink goo necessary for cpu fans?

Use whatever thermal compound you have available. Even the cheapest will do, as it is just a P3 800mHz.

For $100 you could have bought a Dremel and DIY :) And you'd have a dremel for future mods :P

Check out this case mod

Looks fugly. Not ugly, but fugly. There's an arcade I occasionally go to in Northridge, CA. called "Family Fun Arcade". The owner decorated the walls inside with old arcade system boards :) Nice place to get jumpers :P

ATI R300 Thermal Shim Problems?

The R300 is designed to be used with a heatsink that utilizes a thermal pad, which bridges the gap. I for one do not like the idea, but supposedly the shim is there to protect the surface mount components adjacent to the R300 core. I would just lap the shim and use some thin mica sheets to...
