If your company said buy 3 retail anti-virus programs for a few laptops.

Symantec antivirus. (Not norton, but symantec corporate antivirus.) Simply brilliant. Ofcourse, who needs antivirus anyways? I most certainly don't have one. And no firewall either.

Well, ubuntu is definently not to my liking. And saying that gentoo is hard, is just plain wrong. It's very customizable, and very very basic. It's just a different setup than windows. Hell, i managed to get one up and running with minimal (very minimal) linux experience. And i'm typing from it...

need to perform a guttman wipe from within windows

Boot a linux live-cd. Run a "shred /dev/whatever" and it's gonna do 25 iterations without config. Very much effective, but not exactly fast. It's a typical Linux program, uses no space what-so-ever, effective, simple and reliable. "man shred" for more info.

ubuntu : how do you configure it to...

Bringing the interface down and bringing it back up will do it. I don't know how ubuntu does it though. And the reason it works with windows is that as soon as it looses connection, it sheds the ip, and dhcp's as soon as the connection is back up. That is an addon for linux, dists. Look at the...
