need help - fan connected but software shows no RPM

Hi, My mobo is the ASUS A7V and my fan is the ThermalTake Volcano II. It is all connected and installed ok. the fan works but the asus probe shows 0 rpm. when I connect my other fan it works and shows the rpm so I know its not the mobo. Is this fan supposed to show the rpm? P.S. - the bios also...

crossover,patch,twisted?

ok right now I have only two computers I want to connect. the NICs and software is all set up. I have a patch cable at home, can I turn it in to a crossover cable or do I have to buy a new one??
