Slow USB 3.0 speeds

Even though GC will work regardless if TRIM is there or not, but TRIM will make GC work much much better. They are somehow related, not totally independent. GC can only recover the cell that marked no longer occupy with useful data. without TRIM, GC cannot recover the cell that no longer use...

OK to mix RAM as long as they have the same speed, capacity, timings, and voltage?

In general, mixing different size, speed, timing...DDR 3 RAM is not an issue. The system should able to automatically pick the highest possible speed (the lowest between the sticks), and run on that speed. e.g. Almost all 1600 RAM can run at 1333, 1066 etc. If not, manually set the parameter...

If that slow speed only happen on writing, but not reading. That may be because no TRIM available via USB connection. Without TRIM, GC cannot zero the cell which no longer require to store any data under the file system. Therefore, in the controller's point of view, the SSD is actually "full"...

Which storage device is best for high heat environments?

I think SSD is a better choice (if cost is not an issue), even both the HDD and SSD rated at the same temperature, the SSD itself will generate less heat, which reduce the chance than the HDD itself heat up the environment and cause the temperature outside the envelope.

Am I wasting $$ on a Samsung 950 Pro SSD?

For boot disk, OS operation etc, that's a waste. All you need is the high IOPS, but not the high sequential read / write speed (the PCIe SSD's main advantage over the SATA SSD). A 850 Evo is the good choice for that, much much cheaper. Work it as hard as possible until it die (many years later)...

Yeah, they never update that page. I guess they just type in all the info at the beginning base on the CPU's "expected behaviour", and keep it forever, no update, no correction.
