  1. I almost bought a pair of 32GB DDR4-2400 kits (well, a single 64GB kit)

Are you 100% sure? I think if you install memory size that larger than the CPU can handle, the system may not even able to boot. :sneaky: e.g. the i7-990x officially only support up to 24G RAM. If you install 4x16G, the system may not just can't use all the RAM, but may not able to boot. (May...
  2. Why does read speed slow towards the end of a failing drive?

The error correction cost lots of time.
  3. 1TB SSD for PS4?

Theoretically it should be better. However, PS4 system is not design to take benefit from SSD, so, the real world speed gain vary a lot. I read a test from a local game magazine, which shows some operation is faster, but some others may be slower than SSHD. However, a SSD for sure can...
  4. SSD Recommendation-

    850 Evo
  5. Install Win10 on M.2 SSD 256 GB or on SSD 2.5" SATA III 1TB

850 Evo, because the much better 4k read performance.
  6. X58 and memory

If you want something fast, X5677 is a good choice as well, unless you really can utilise all 6 cores of the X5650. Another cheap choice is the W36xx CPU. X56xx are build for dual processor system, they are more expensive then the W36xx CPU (with exactly the same core count, speed...
  7. Western Digital Blue HDD failing but SMART says otherthing.

I am not a computer professional. However, I did ask some computer guy. Their general comment about SMART is... HDD fail whatever SMART says; If SMART says your HDD has trouble, you better chance it ASAP. Therefore, SMART is reliable to confirm a HDD failure, but not a good indicator to...
  8. Slow USB 3.0 speeds

Even though GC will work regardless if TRIM is there or not, but TRIM will make GC work much much better. They are somehow related, not totally independent. GC can only recover the cell that marked no longer occupy with useful data. without TRIM, GC cannot recover the cell that no longer use...
  9. OK to mix RAM as long as they have the same speed, capacity, timings, and voltage?

In general, mixing different size, speed, timing...DDR 3 RAM is not an issue. The system should able to automatically pick the highest possible speed (the lowest between the sticks), and run on that speed. e.g. Almost all 1600 RAM can run at 1333, 1066 etc. If not, manually set the parameter...
  10. Slow USB 3.0 speeds

If that slow speed only happen on writing, but not reading. That may be because no TRIM available via USB connection. Without TRIM, GC cannot zero the cell which no longer require to store any data under the file system. Therefore, in the controller's point of view, the SSD is actually "full"...
  11. Looking for HDMI Extender

Hi all, I will move back to my newly renovate home soon. For the new setup, my Computer will be on the 2nd floor (computer corner), and my 4K TV will be on the 1st floor (living room). So, I would like to get a HDMI + USB extender (via CAT cable) to make me able to play 4K games on the TV...
  12. Which storage device is best for high heat environments?

I think SSD is a better choice (if cost is not an issue), even both the HDD and SSD rated at the same temperature, the SSD itself will generate less heat, which reduce the chance than the HDD itself heat up the environment and cause the temperature outside the envelope.
  13. SSD PCIe v SATA

Sounds like the computer take around 30s to initialise the PCIe adaptor + SM951 combo.
  14. Am I wasting $$ on a Samsung 950 Pro SSD?

For boot disk, OS operation etc, that's a waste. All you need is the high IOPS, but not the high sequential read / write speed (the PCIe SSD's main advantage over the SATA SSD). A 850 Evo is the good choice for that, much much cheaper. Work it as hard as possible until it die (many years later)...
  15. Xeon or i7 4790k?

Yeah, they never update that page. I guess they just type in all the info at the beginning base on the CPU's "expected behaviour", and keep it forever, no update, no correction.
