maybe u need to specify some port range for the passive mode, forward that ranges in the router and start the server to use passive mode
when you connect from outside your network always use passive
when you connect from inside the network use the active / port mode
u might want to try the latest edition of the popular distro ( like 8.0 for RedHat )
it usually detect most of your hardware which leave you with less headache

i think you need to configure you ftp server to do a passive transfer.
You'll need to transfer the range of ports you use in the router.
then tell your clients to enable passive transfer when they try to connect to your server.
I got 5 more drives PM-ed today , which total to 8 drives .. :)

There's an addition parameter to the serial number that I mentioned before :
WCAD135xxxxx is the 8MB ones
WCAD12xxxxxx is the WCAD in disguised

I wrote that WCAD = 8 MB cache cause i got 3 of those and they all 8 MB cache, the other one ( which I'm gonna exchange today ) is the WMAD.

well you can still exchange it for the one with the 8 MB.
or if you cut the UPC already, you can always buy one more from bestbuy ( the SE one ) and repackaged the 2 MB one for refund ( :P)
