why are some nv fans so hard on the competing ati products?

That's plausible... do newer ATi drivers really improve performance that much (I'd assume nV's didn't get slower)? I mean, that's pretty damn impressive, if they do.

Hmm. According to AT's benchmarks, the two are very close at SM2.0 without AA/AF, and the GT falls behind somewhat with AA/AF on, but it's not a very huge difference. Maybe you should try different drivers or something, dunno, but it should probably be performing faster than it is.

5800U Doom3 Shocker!

Clock speeds and memory indeed look to be identical (though one is DDR2 and the other 3), but the architecture is wildly different. 6600GT - 8x1/16x0 pipes, SM3.0, rotated grid AA 5800U - 4x2/8x0 pipes, SM2.0(b?), ordered grid AA, horrible at DX9 and bigger performance hit with AA/AF

Get the 3.4GHz Extreme Edition. It makes the Internet faster! All joking aside: - I believe, but am not certain, that the vanilla IC7 doesn't have onboard LAN. Either get a seperate card for it, or get an IC7-G or AI7. - GeIL doesn't have the best reputation. Get Crucial, Corsair, Mushkin...

Well, I'm not particularly good at notebooks, but the GamePC ones look appealing, the CEN3 and 4 particularly. With a 1.5GHz P-M and Mobility 9700, it's roughly the equivalent of a desktop A64 2500+ (which doesn't exist) and Radeon 9600 Pro, which is pretty good and you're not going to get...

nVidia being faster at Doom 3 was expected and logical, as ATi's OpenGL drivers are slow (at least for the X800 series - oddly, I don't see this as much with the previous generation), as has been shown with many other games previously (Q3, COD, that Jedi game), plus nVidia has UltraShadow. With...
