Looking for a simple linux installation with good WiFi support

Ubuntu is popular, but not as good as Mepis for the things most Linux newbies look for.

Seagate vs Samsung

I can't imagine a quieter drive than either of the Samsungs I have, a 80GB SATA and 200GB IDE.

Ubuntu 5.10 is out!

I really want to like Ubuntu: sleek, different, great Gnome implementation. I tried the 5.10 LiveCD, didn't detect my wireless, couldn't configure it aftwerwards, same old problems.

Why do web sites still look bad in Linux?

I'll see if I can get screenshots (I have to switch hard drives on my laptop). I thought it was a Mozilla problem until I tried Firefox in Windows. I use Clear Type.

Linux for complete and utter first time users

I have been using Linux on and off for five years and I would not suggest SuSe, Fedora or Ubuntu. With all of them you'll need to configure something and it will be difficult for a newbie. I would also recommend that you stay with Windows. If you have to try Linux, go with SimplyMepis.

I swear by my Dell but I don't game, so I don't know how it would perform. It really is a bargain, especially if you wait for a sale.

I am also using Mepis 3.3.2 test2 and it works perfectly in my old laptop.

PCLINUX OS?

PCLinuxOS was one of about ten distros I tried before deciding on Mepis. It is OK, but I liked Kanotix better and generally I feel more confortable with Debian because of apt and synaptic. Ubuntu is beautiful and different because of Gnome, but it is still too much like the old Linux for me...

I must say, Ubuntu (kubuntu version) is nice!

After trying Linux for years, this is the first time I like it as implemented in Ubuntu and Kubuntu. I hope they improve the installer and include a "us_intl with deadkeys" keyboard layout.

Newb's New Ubuntu Box Questions

Sorry for the blank post. Ubuntu is great but so is Kubuntu. I tried both and I think I will stay with Kubuntu for particular reasons that may not apply to you (KDE has a global setting for accents on foreign words), but Ubuntu's implementation of Gnome is the first I really like.
