If size is a concern then Canon Powershot (IXUS in Europe) 500/430 or Sony DSC-W1.

XGA vs SXGA

A 14" laptop screen with higher resolution than XGA is always a SXGA+ which is 1400x1050, or UXGA which is 1600x1200. A SXGA+ screen running XGA will not be as clear as a XGA running XGA. LCD's are best at their native resolution. I am not sure I understand your final question, but the laptop...

Radeon mobility 7500 vs mobility 9000

FWIW, I seem to recall from previous T40 threads that the 7500 scores about 3900 points in 3dMark01, while the 9000 scores about 5000 pts.

How much video memory for a non-gamer's system?

If your buying a mobo just get one with intregrated graphics. Intel Extreme Graphics 2 works fine for me at the office, despite it's very bad rumour.

Mail.app (OSX) and address book

We recently switched from OS9 to OS 10.3 (Panther) at work. We are using the built in mail client called mail.app. It's a nice program, and works fine with imap accounts, and so on. So basically it fullfills our every need. Except for one area... Addressbook. Maybe it just needs to be...

Wireless network cards: PCI or USB?

Don't know. I have a Linksys G pci in my desktop, and it works fine. Drops connection from time to time when there's no activity (resumes right away), but that's probably user error :)
