Sub-$1600 Laptop, Sony or Lenovo?

I would go for the ThinkPad because the Sony has a glare display, which I wouldn't trust for accurate color reproduction. Your best bet would be a second hand Lenovo T60 though with a Flexview display. Those were S-IPS panels or so, and should be better than the panels (TN?) notebooks come with...

upgrade path for a s939?

Hm, doesn't sound like quality, maybe you should go for a 300-350W Seasonic or something like that? They are more efficient anyway so you safe some money. Just make sure it's one of the S12-II series or their OEM equivalent (SS-xx0ET, IIRC).

upgrade path for a s939?

I'm not gaming... well, ok, sometimes I am, but that's not where my priority lies. I need a lot of CPU power for rendering stuff... getting a decent image takes at least 10-20 hours with my current CPU, so getting something faster... :D My Abit AT8 does 240 easily, have gone to 270 but...

Hm... there is no performance difference between DDR1 and 2, but there is a quite big price difference. Considering that a X2 3800+ should get around 2.6, 2.7 GHz while E2140s do maybe 3.0-3.4 GHz, somewhat in that area (might be a bit hard cause I don't have too much money to spend on a decent...

Agreed, get a second hand one. I'm quite possibly selling my abit AT8 soon, I guess you should get a well proven board pretty cheap.

upgrade path for a s939?

Keeping the old system would be nice (renderfarm), but I doubt I can afford that. AM2 makes no sense I think... the AM2 X2s are cheaper, RAM is cheaper, but that doesn't justify the new RAM and board. A E2140 doesn't cost much more and is by far faster. Only other thing that I would have to buy...

A bit late, but I went from a AXP to a A64 without a problem. ;)

Hm... I'm in the same situation, got a 3200+ @2,4 GHz, but I want more. Why should I get an Opteron? There is quite a price difference to the X2 3800+, shouldn't that OC well too? And what about the E2140/E2160 route... doesn't make sense? I do want to upgrade RAM as well. Guess I have to...

Yeah, heard about them. I ordered a XL-1R (I guess that's the same as the XL-1...) together with 2 Revoltec Dark Grey, all 120mm. Will see how good they are :) Btw., if performance is required... I think the Panaflo's are pretty decent, got 2 of them, at 5v they are pretty silent too :)

Mh... I would suggest to look out for Deltas. http://www.sidewindercomputers.com/delhigper.html The problem is that they are usually between 38 and 76mm thick... :( But you will get insane performance (up to 220 cfm), insane loudness (up to 65 dB) and insane power usage (up to 32W).

Yes, thats what I wanted to say. The Skyline is an entirely different class than the Koenigsegg. Same as the Hayabusa. All three vehicles are in different classes. The Hayabusa is less than a 4th of the Skyline. More a 7th. Koenigsegg is IMHO same class as Ferrari F50, Enzo and McLaren F1. The...

There's just a small difference. The Koenigsegg (definately a nice car) is a race car. The Skyline is targeting the same direction, but its a 2+2 seater opposed to the 2 seater Koenigsegg. The Koenigsegg is weighting only 1.2 tons opposed to the 1.6 of the Skyline. And the Skyline comes with 280...
