An alternative approach to the "my OS soon won't be supported any more" problem?

I think this is a bad idea. The user saves a .pdf.exe file, the Linux browser doesn't virus scan the file, and the host OS won't have updated virus definitions either. Maybe you could set up ClamAV to scan all downloaded files somehow, but I think it would be a significant undertaking to make...

Why is this bash script failing?
