Just FYI, if you're looking for a good website to stress test an older laptop, go to chilis.com. It's flash based and is brutal. I tried a thinkpad t22 PIII 900mhz, and the site was almost unusable. I thought I was going to have to kill the browser via task manager when I tried it w/ my PII 300...
It's pretty much the base configuration, but the seller claims it's in excellent condition, and that the battery holds a full charge. Before I started bidding I searched completed items. I think I did pretty good. There were a few that went in the $270-$280 range, but those were the exceptions...
Thanks for the suggestions. I actually use FireFox with flashblock to prevent unwanted flash animations, and I use FoxIt reader for PDFs. The problem is sometimes I *need* to see the flash animations, they're integral to the site I'm visiting (i.e. dish network). Again, thanks for the...
I currently have a PII 300 laptop that I use for web surfing. It still works fine, except it's slow when I hit a site with flash ads. I was thinking of picking up a ~$200 laptop off ebay to replace it. I think a PIII 800mhz or better processor and 256mb would probably work fine (OS will either...
I recently got a widescreen LCD for my wife's Dell 4500. The ATI Rage in the system didn't support widescreen resolutions so I plopped in an Geforce 6200a. Everything works fine, except when the machine comes out of standby, the video sometimes doesn't come back to life (drives spin up, lights...
Another approach would be to smear poop all over your computer, keyboard, and mouse (and the hard drive if you're paranoid). I doubt too many people would even enter the same room as that machine, let alone use it.
What he said. TrueCrypt lets you create a virtual drive, backed by a single encrypted file. Pick a string password / pass phrase and you're golden. It even supports giving the virtual drive two passwords. One exposes one set of files, the other exposes another. This way if someone points a gun...
I remember this one I used to play... There was a small line on each side of the screen. Each player controlled one of the lines. You could move it up and down. The goal was to bounce a ball back and forth by hitting it with your line. I think it was called Street Fighter 2.
Yes. That's a very worthwhile upgrade. Because I'm feeling generous today, I'll send you a *brand new* FX5200 if you send me your x800xt pe and $50 cash.
Would it really? It didn't seem to make much of a difference in the few games I tried (was a while ago - I think Splinter Cell Chaos Theory was the last game I tried overclocking for -- I think I got maybe 2-4 extra fps when going from 2.4->3ghz). It definately didn't seem worth potentially...
Thanks for all the replies. To answer a few questions, I have a P4 2.4B, 533fsb, no hyper threading. I can play most games pretty comfortably right now at 1024x768 and medium settings, but a few struggle. I haven't tried Oblivion yet.
I'll probably get the x800xl and see if I can limp along...
I currently have a P4 2.4ghz AGP system w/ a Radeon 9800pro. I'm considering getting a little more mileage out of my current setup by getting the AGP x800xl that's on clearance at ATI's web site for $119. I was just wondering if anyone wanted to venture a guess as to how long it might last me...
