Rebuilding an existing PC, need some advice......

save your money on a 2nd hard drive and just buy a cd or dvd burner to backup the Quicken files.

fixing a hard drive with bad clusters

go to hitachi's site and download their hard drive diagnostics to put on a floppy. They ususally give you the ability to do a low level format which write zeros to all blocks on the drive. After that, then do another scandisk.

HDCP support native on new ATI cards. Need for HDCP monitor?

According to this new article from Anandtech: http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=2532 The new ATI cards will support HDCP. Will this eliminate the need to have a HDCP compliant monitor in order to watch HDCP media?

DDR vs DDR2 What's the deal w/new timings?

is DDR2 at 5-4-4-9 equivilant to say a DDR 2-3-3-3? or something along those lines? or is DDR2 another animal all together PS: i won't be purchasing this RAM until probably Jan or Feb timeframe. It will be going in a AMD M2 socket board which will natively support DDR2.

wired Internet connection woes :(

is your buddy using AOL? Even though they have broadband service, you have to install their software in order to access the internet. Other than that, it sounds like you weren't getting an ip. Need more info about his network setup.

Comp Building touble

take the board out of the case......connect only: PSU, RAM, Video, and CPU. Power it on by shorting the power switch leads on the MB. If it posts, go from there.

DDR vs DDR2 What's the deal w/new timings?

Actually, i'm holding out until AMD M2 socket comes out which will support DDR2. With that said.....what kind of performance timings should i look for?

i don't think you'll get your data back. However, if there is any chance it is still usable...you're best bet is to do a low level format on the drive which basically writes zeros to all sectors. I believe the Data Lifegard tools will do that. if not, you can find other utilities that will...

DDR vs DDR2 What's the deal w/new timings?

It's been a while since i've had to shop for a new system......if i go a route where i will need DDR2...what kind of timings are good? I know lower the better...that's about as far as my knowledge goes for these timing deals i.e: 2,3,3,5 3,3,3,4 etc etc Just so we can narrow this...

Computer rebooting randomly.

We need more info....do the following: 1. Right click "My Computer" and choose properties 2. click the advanced tab 3. click Settings under "Startup and Recovery" 4. Uncheck "Automatically Restart" under the "System failure" section. Next time it tries to reboot, it will blue...

XP Home and IE problem

FYI, there are about a million posts if you search google for "aurora spyware" i believe you'll also be able to track down an aurora removal tool. i had same thing and the tool fixed it.
