Thank you very much for your opinions, all! I hear many good things about gentoo. Unfortunately, I've forgotten much of what I knew about the in's and out's of Linux by slacking off for too long. Slacking off does not a Slackware meister make. I'm curious what changes Novell's purchase of SuSE...

What's Low Level Format?

The HDD's maker should have diagnostic tools available on its Web site. The closest thing to a "low level format" that a home user should do is to write all 1's on the drive. If the hard drive is acting weird, a "low level format" isn't a bad idea. You'll need to partition and format the drive...

Interesting article about "BSD for Linux User's" in yesterday's www.slashdot.org . FreeBSD make a lot of sense, it's just the philosophical differences that need to be understood. Easier said than done sometimes. Right sidebar.

I'm succumbing to anti-MS hostility lately. While I like XP Pro a lot, the fact that MS takes its sweet time(boy howdy) with security patches gives me attitude. I'm running SuSE 8.1 Pro and coping with most of its flaws. Anyone try SuSE 9.0 Pro or Personal? Has it addressed some of 8.1's KDE...

What is the best DDR 512MB Ram for under $80.00?

Just bought 2 512 Mb PC-3200 CAS3 sticks from Buffalo. The Samsung mem chips on them are approved for i865 by Intel/Asus. These sticks have the Samsungs soldered to a Taiwanese board in Japan. I sincerely hope that they'll work fine in Dual Channel on a Asus P4P8000 Pro sporting a 2.4C. At...

PSU help

It's hard to beat SPI Sparkle PS's in bang for buck. Some are optimized for Athlon XP's, others are designed to support P4's. Suggest that you read the fine print to assure that you will get the right model.

Dual Channel Memory and 865pe

The DIMMS are all supposed to be identical. If all four memory slots are populated, the board runs slower than 400 Mhz. 320 Mhz is the limit, if I remember correctly. If you wait too long before buying DDR that matches the sticks you already have, the exact modules may not be available. If you...

That's reassuring, thanks Chucko. The Eg was sold out of the Kingston Value PC-3200. I bought Buffalo PC-3200 sticks with Samsung SE chips instead. Fingers are crossed!

Motherboard Power Switch Connector Problem

It would help to post what m'board this is. Use a pin or needle to release the tiny lock on the pin in the plug, then slip the pin out out of the plug. You don't need to unlock the tiny brass lock to insert the electrical pin back in to the plug.

Good DDR for non-OC'd Intel 865GBFLK?

With a 2.4C on the Intel 865GBFLK, I'd like to run 2 512 Mb PC-3200 modules to take advantage of the Dual Channel feature. I don't want to OC, and I don't need the performance boost provided by expensive DDR. Are two 512 Mb sticks of Kingston PC-3200 with 3-3-3 Timing(I think) OK?

Any difference between expensive and cheap NICs?

Perhaps the new 1 Gb/s form factor adds complexity to this Q. There doesn't seem to be much difference in performance between expensive and cheap 10/100 NIC's. One caveat, ECS K7S5A's do not like the Netgear FA 313 at all. Pricewatch reveals that at least one model of 3com NIC is down to $20.

A few questions about Nforce and the sis 745 chipset

From what I read, the SiS 745 chipset offers very little of a performance boost over the SiS 735 chipset. It's only benefit is that it handles (DDR333) PC-2700 DDR RAM. However, there is no boost in performance when using the faster memory--as far as ECS's K7S6A mainboard is concerned. For a...
