Discussion Zen 5 Speculation (EPYC Turin and Strix Point/Granite Ridge - Ryzen 9000)

I kinda agree, but at the same time we have to consider the current AMD is very different from the AMD that developed zen 1 to zen 4. Around the time they started working on Halo, they had probably realized they weren't a broke company without profits anymore, and their products were going to...

A bit smaller? Likely yes. A lot smaller? Nope. On the list of reasons for Skymont area efficiency, AVX512 is closer to the bottom than to the top. Especially if you take into account the possibility of a "double pumped" implementation ala AMD.

Do you seriously think Skymont is good and efficient because it lacks AVX512?

Afaik not to latency, but definitely to bandwidth. Besides small (<10B) models no one uses system RAM for LLMs, once you offload to that some parts of a large model, performance tanks very quickly.

I might be wrong, but this doesn't sound right at all. We know part of it is Intel's P core being bad, but if you look at Granite Rapids vs Turin, GNR loses badly in all metrics and has a much lower base frequency. Not all of the difference is architectural imho. At "not 5GHz+" frequencies...

Isn't zen 4 vcache made on N7/N6? Even going N4 would increase density if that's the case. Though it kinda kills one of the purposes of vcache.

    Question i5-4670k - Still Enough for Civ7?

Writing as someone who once had a 4670k, I'd say run away. I first upgraded to an R5 3600 and that already provided a massive improvement in any task I used my computer for, including strategy games (and I had an old Polaris card). It was also cooler and better for my electricity bills. If your...

Seriously? Who even uses ICC anymore? Also, I might be wrong but ICC is basically deprecated software, it has been replaced by an LLVM-based compiler similar to clang (ICX). The benchmarking landscape on the Windows side is in a seriously bleak situation imo. Edit: had a look at ICX and it has...

    Question DEGRADING Raptor lake CPUs

How so? The average is over all kinds of benchmarks, including a lot of fully multicore ones, which were expected to be fine. But what if a customer specifically bought RPL for numpy or crypto single core performance? -8% is basically worth a generation of performance these days. In their actual...

So much for "no performance regression". https://www.phoronix.com/benchmark/result/raptor-lake-0x129-intel-microcode-testing-on-linux/result-1.svgz

    Question Zen 6 Speculation Thread

This is the answer really, imho. The zen compact cores are much more area-efficient than apple cores. Did they? Except for Apple, which only sells consumer hardware, aren't all other arm vendors at similar PPC* and area levels compared to Zen (C) cores? *At least on average, considering both...

Discussion Zen 5 Speculation (EPYC Turin and Strix Point/Granite Ridge - Ryzen 9000)

Wait, doesn't Windows rotate single thread workloads among cores? On Linux I don't think I ever encountered an issue like this, every 10 seconds or so a thread is passed to a different core, at least according to my system monitor. Perhaps the Asus laptop is doing something like this but not all...

Discussion Zen 5 Speculation (EPYC Turin and Strix Point/Granite Ridge - Ryzen 9000)

Not necessarily. There are many distros nowadays that ship optimized x86_64-v4 (AVX512) binaries, and some are going further, having repositories for packages compiled for zen4 and zen5 uarchs (CachyOS). I don't know how extensive these repos are, but it should be feasible to include most common...

tbh he also says in another comment the video was shot at 3AM, he probably rushed the whole thing after getting the cpu 😅
