Assuming this goes in a small box in your living room then you'll want to minimize the heat your parts are generating because ventilation is a bigger problem in these small boxes. For instance, if you go with an AMD part then instead of the 65 watt 4200+ recommended above go for the comparable...
Finally discovered that I have to go to Control Panel -> Power Management -> Minimal Power Management. Now the CPU and voltage clock back like they should.
Well, I went to AMD's site and installed their latest Cool 'n' Quiet driver, and their dashboard program to see how much power it's saving me. AMD's software reports the power use is always at 1.300 volts, no matter how much or how little I do. So CPU-Z must be wrong, although it's still weird...
I overclocked each of my builds in the last five years, but this time I've decided to go for a small (Antec Aria) quiet PC. Wanted one of the paper-launched Energy Efficient Athlons, but finally gave up on waiting.
While overclocking I've managed to burn out an Athlon XP 1700+ (a voltage...
I bought a new x2 3800+ AM2 processor a few days ago and noticed a strange quirk. I have Cool 'n' Quiet enabled in BIOS and also installed the AMD Cool 'n' Quiet driver in WinXP.
I ran the computer for 10 hours with Rosetta@Home and Einstein@Home. Both cores of the CPU were running at 100%...
The ASUS is notorious for memory trouble with higher speed RAM, see Newegg's reviews. I just got it and a set of 1GB Corsair XMS2 Twin2x memory rated at 1.9V and DDR2 800, which has excellent reviews. I can run either stick in any slot at the rated speeds, but when I try for dual channel then it...
I've had similar issues in the past (with Athlon XP) with one problem caused by the motherboard, and a later one by the power supply. As everyone says, you need to start swapping parts and see if you can isolate the source of trouble.
I'd say the RAM is definitely the most important thing, as mentioned above. My brother-in-law's computer with 256MB had become doggedly slow over the years, but when I put in a 512MB stick then it sped up drastically. For "parent level computing" any CPU and hard drive is probably fine.
A few days ago I ordered the Toshiba Satellite M60 with 17" widescreen & ATI Mobility Radeon X600 GPU. Soon after I noticed that the spec sheet on Toshiba Direct says that the M60 has the X600SE as an option, but no X600. The customization page however lists X600 and no X600SE. Checked around...
I've noticed that periodically in the list of active icons in the lower right corner of Windows XP a small mail icon appears, with the address "host18-14.pool212171.interbusiness.it". Googling interbusiness.it I find this is a prime source of spam. I've run spybot, microsoft anti-spyware, and...
Thanks for the info. Checked and found the chipset is the Intel 440BX series. Supposedly supports up to 1GB RAM, although I suppose this doesn't mean Compaq's BIOS will be OK. I'll give it a shot and if it fails then I'll sell the RAM on EBay.
