You don't really need that icon to be eligible for an upgrade. I have done the upgrade to a newly built htpc without the icon, though with all the latest updates of course.
Your Windows key is tied to your hardware ie motherboard. You have to have a validated product key from either Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 when upgrading to Windows 10. After the first successful upgrade to Win10 your new key is generated within Windows and sent to Microsoft's servers, this is why...
So...you had the computer opened up, components exposed and also plugged to an outlet? I'm assume it was still plugged in since your brother turned it on, otherwise you would have it someplace else and not readily available to an outlet.
