How long does it take to crack an 8 digit password?

The only time having a hash weakens a password is when there are collisions. It's why many people are using SHA-1 instead of MD5. Also, if someone has write-access to the hash file, they can re-write the hash file so that they know what collides.

Making a phone ring

If it is a "normal" phone that does not require a power cord, you can apply a certain amount of current (45V, IIRC) through the telephone wires to the phone, and it will ring. Normally (if you're connected to a network), the system will then drop the current to a certain voltage that is below...

That would be 26 letters lower, plus 26 letters upper, plus 10 numbers = 62 chars 62^8 = 218340105584896 possible combinations It really depends on what you are cracking. Zip password crackers can try 4.5 million/sec, Excel crackers are about 230,000/sec. From what I've seen, OS crackers...

Plan to get revenge on a soda theif at work

You guys don't realize that if you do anything to saboage the cans so that he gets screwed up when he drinks it, it happens to your own cans. So you won't have anything to drink. That said, I believe an anonymous letter on the company fridge will do the trick.

Looking for a crt 1600x1200@85Hz

Yeah, I've got an IBM trinitron that does 2048x1536, it's refurbished but I haven't had any problems in almost a year. Got it for about 300.

which CPU should i buy for a rather small micro ATX

750 duron - those things run cool. :P But seriously, get an A64 (a mobile, 35W if they have it) and use cool&quiet - it automatically adjusts your CPU speed to what you are doing. My 2ghz 3000+ used to run at 800mhz most of the time, and I would get temps below ambient with stock cooling...
