For gaming, I was under the impression that hardware calibrators like the Spyder 3 didn't work well since games have a tendency to reset the colour settings you have while playing. Has this changed?

Battlefield 3 Alpha Testing - GPU & CPU

I'm going to disagree with you there. The general consensus from people on another forum I frequent who were in the alpha is that the system requirements are similar, if slightly higher, than Bad Company 2 while looking almost twice as good.

PS3 change of policy

It's just general usage statistics so that they can make their product better. No different than Valve and their games. Not only does Steam collect your hardware statistics, but with games like TF2 they track where you die, what weapons you use, etc.

4890 or a 5xxx card?

I would say get a 4870, maybe even a 4850. It should be more than sufficient for anything out now, and in a year, when games come out that will require something more, the 6870 and the successor to Fermi will be out. Plus, with your current monitor, even a 4850 is overkill.
