seems like there was a setting under adanced to 1)resize partition, 2)leave unused space free, and 3)leave unused a seperate partition. If you choose option 1 there might be another option that allows you to restore on the smaller partition. I am pretty sure that I was successful in restoring...

you have something corrupt in the registry....but it may have been caused by a hardware problem. Try a Win98 start-up disk and execute the registry restore if you can. Or use the Xp cd and go to the repair console.
download hard drive mechanic demo. It will at least tell you if it is a hard drive problem or not. Then restore to an ealier registry - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/304449
