Best 4x Space Game?

Ascendancy is an old 4X galactic conquest game, playable under DOSBox, which was pretty good. It has since been updated (as of 2011) for IOS. But MOO2 is still the gold standard. Galactic Civilizations 2 is probably the best of the new ones which have come out in the last five or six years, though.

Power requirements

Need help on new monitor 24"+ purchase!

The last 24" monitor I bought was the SyncMaster T240HD, it was going for 300 bucks. It's a TN panel but has the added bonus of an internal digital tv tuner, remote and everything, it's pretty nice to have access to cable tv on your desktop. I think it has been phased on in favor of the...

I can't wait for the HD6990...

Really wish I could afford that dual gpu 6900 but it'll be like 650 bucks, easily. Way too much, I've never spent more than 350 for a GPU. Besides not so sure my Phenom II @ 3.5 ghz would feed it enough, and I'd have to upgrade that, too. Being on top is expensive! Think we'll find out by the...

If you're a gamer, with those choices, definitely Phenom II, it performs pretty much on-par with a C2D in a gaming situation. C2D is still better if you do lots of heavy CPU stuff like encoding or photoshop filters or some such thing. For example my old E660 @ 3.0 ghz was able to complete...

High end GPU without unbearable noise problems?

I own a Sapphire HD4890 and it is actually one of the quietest video cards that I've ever owned. The fan rarely goes above 35% even under the heaviest of stresses and at that level it just isn't noticeable over the other components in my system. At 100% it is pretty loud, but that never happens...

Does anyone have a link to a GMAbooster download

http://www.gmabooster.com/ is the website I only found out about this after I sent my 1000HE in for RMA, but I'm definitely trying it out as soon as it comes back from the manufacturer. This little program works with the GMA950 that's in there, it's not much but at least it'll be all it can be.

Need a DOS Box with the ability to connect to a network!

Probably Win98SE is the way to go, it supports USB at the least which'll make your life much easier especially when it comes to networking options. DOS had almost nothing in that regard, it was usually hand-coded by each individual party to allow for a specific program to work... and so you...

Major temperature problems with E6600

Your CPU is totally okay. The Core 2 Duos just run fairly hot. It's pretty difficult to damage a processor with excess heat... of course, higher temperatures do drastically shorten the lifespan but probably not shorter than the period of time you'll use the processor for until your next upgrade...

Is my CPU dead? Edit: NO! It works!

If I was in your situation, I'd just take the computer to a computer store and have the techs figure it out. They'll be able to narrow down the problem component and you'll know how to make it functional again. The service will be like 30-40 bucks and you'll retain more on the hair on your head...

Next Gen Video Cards?? When Do They Come Out?

The current generation of video cards (R600, G80's) focuses on a single large GPU. I think the manufacturers will be moving to multi-core GPUs, that will probably be the next big thing for graphics technology. I think it's slated for R700 and maybe even G90, too. Though it's nothing much more...

Replacement for Athlon 1.4

Be sure that your motherboard can support a faster processor before looking to purchase it. Check your mobo manufacturer's site for bios info, see what options you have. I think Thunderbird topped out at 1.4 ghz so you'll need support for a Barton or something like that.

what cpu is best?

The E6400 at stock is actually faster than a FX55 in almost every way possible. But the thing is, these chips are extremely overclockable. You'll be sitting at 3.0 ghz with very little effort which'll blow everything else in your lineup away.
