Seems as if the only influence you have over PWM/non-PWM fans is for the CPU cooler. Either that or the CPU cooler fan type can be changed to either PWM or DC mode regardless of the Q-Fan setting. It's a bit hard to discern more information from the manual and later BIOS revisions might even...

Thanks for the suggestions. :) Everything but the cooler has already been bought. We went with a variation on the 690G board, you recommended, namely the ASUS M2A-VM HDMI. I think it'll suit them fine...

Thanks for the input. I'm still wavering between the PWM and the traditional fan, but I'm leaning towards your suggestion. It's not really that they're an old couple. Both are in their fifties. Hearing probably isn't what it used to be, though. In any case, no overclocking will be going on, so...

Maximus Formula & E8400 BIOS flash

According to an ASUS technician you can boot with an unrecognized CPU, but you should perform a BIOS update ASAP thereafter. Just for God's sake don't flash from within Windows (or anything else that runs in protected mode). If you use the built-in EZ Flash software you should be fine.

Is 2.2V the default for your RAM? I ask because the JEDEC default value for DDR2 typically is 1.8V. What happens if you set all memory-related settings to Auto?

Thanks for your input! I went to the trouble of decompiling the latest BIOS for all Gigabyte X38-based boards. According to the Gigabyte website they should support ECC memory. Alas, the word "ECC" doesn't occur anywhere in any of the decompiled BIOS versions. Seems I'm still set and sold on...
