You raise some very valid points. Hobbies can certainly help you establish relationships and become part of a "community." Certainly, if you are prudent in other financial areas -- a hobby can simply be a form of entertainment -- just like those with a custom home theatre, woodworking, RC...

Ironically I still have the Mustang. It hasn't been driven in about 3 years. 2000 Mustang GT with only 32k on the odometer -- and just 500 miles on the built engine and tranny. It is a millstone around my neck. I wish I'd have saved that money and invested it or kept it in savings!
