Just cannibalising various old PC bits and getting a complete system going again...
Motherboard: ASrock 775DUAL-VSTA
reporting as:
Bios: L3.19a
CPU: Intel Pentium E6300 - Wolfdale @2800MHz [recognised perfectly]
BUS: 266
FSB: 1067
with Video: an old AGP Pony/nVidia NV43...
Guyz just looking to re-use an old board from an ex-PC of my folks and was puzzled re board version and CPU support.
I know there are two releases of the board ie non-R2.0 and R2.0

Re upgrading my CPU : as well as the symptom I had with Vista HP Media Center getting very upset afterwards (solved, via Googling as described above), just found that iTunes no longer regarded the PC as authorised!
From iTunes help seems my workaround is
"If you forgot to deauthorize a...
VIA: Advice above indicates NO NEED for Via drivers with Windows 7 - whether there is some benefit or not if/when Via release any remains to be seen.
REALTEK: their website DOES have Windows 7 (&Vista) HD drivers - I used the latest package from their site when I redid my Via/Audio/Graphics...
Delighted to report that for a week now my Intel Pentium DC E6300 upgraded 775Dual-VSTA has been entirely stable ever since "fixing" the drivers as reported above (09/30/2009 02:58pm) - phew :)
As a matter of interest/anticipation does anyone have any view on what (if any) drivers are going...
Pleased to say I've had 2 days of trouble free Pentium Dual Core E6300'ing so far since my driver cleanout/replacement; and I've managed to find/update the Everest benchmarks comparing:
Before : Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 @1866MHz
After : Intel Pentium Dual Core E6300 @2800MHz
ie everything has...
Update on my BSOD and updating the drivers to hopefully avoid/cure.
After the extra advice from Hlafordlaes plus another BSOD at midnight last night, I decided to get on and have a go at solving, after doing a CHKDSK /F this morning to make sure all was well with the disk/data directory (as...
Thanks for that really interesting/promising response.
1. Temperature: Definitely not a board reported CPU temperature issue - never above mid 40s when I check BIOS and occasionally I hear CPU fan ramp up temporarily.
2. Memory: Ran MemTest86+ v4.00 for 7hours today while out and 6 or 8 (can't...
Shucks - I did speak too soon re my PDC E6300 on 775DUAL-VSTA upgrade (see above).
Just had my second in 1.5 days BSOD. Managed to note down
"IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL"
Searching suggests
1) might be CPU overheat
2) memory addressing issue
3) device driver
Any ideas anyone ?
I'm...
Re the extra memory - that was what originally motivated me to try the tweaked BIOS - see this older thread page:
http://forums.anandtech.com/me...AR_FORUMVIEWTMP=Linear
I have a couple of longer postings half way down that page re my RAM 4GB experiences and what reported what. (Can't see a...
Well I've done my CPU UPGRADE my 3yr old Intel Core2 Duo E6300 (1.8GHz) to a new (cost GBP 57 delivered from eBuyer within 2 days) Pentium Dual Core E6300 (2.8GHz) and here's how I got on to help others:
775DUAL-VSTA already had latest 3.19a BIOS - ie that explicitly says it supports the PDC...
Thanks Hlafordlaes for the response.
I decided to plump for the PDC E6300 at GBP 57 delivered, based on such explicit support of it in the PCTreiber BIOSes and the Virtualization for Windows 7.
MKD
Contemplating upping my system a bit in anticipation of Windows 7.
Built it in Dec 2006 and increased the memory from 2GB and silenced video from 6600GT
ie:
Motherboard: 775Dual-VSTA
Firmware: 3.19 per CPU-Z
(ie the 3.19a from the brilliant http://www.pctreiber.net/filebase.php?cat=22)...
The website used to specifically warn you to use Winflash 4.11 - as I documented in some detail a few weeks back (previous page) - I didn't understand why, I just obeyed it - though since they they have reorganised their website and messed up the links.
Certainly 4.11 worked on mine.
As Hlafordlaes has confirmed, the amended/updated BIOSes SUPPORT up to 4GB (ie 2x2GB) and do not REQUIRE it. Pleased to say still no more visible/known glitches with 3.17 with my 2x2GB.
