clic, click, click . . . beeeeep

I built this PC about 6 months ago. Starting within the last few weeks, it will occasionally refuse to boot up. I hear a "click ... click ... click ..." clock-like tic-tocking sound, followed by a long "beeeeeeeeep" ... and then nothing; just a black screen. Just now, turning the surge...

which x800xl to get?

I have the PCI-Express Gigabyte model with the fanless heatpipe cooler, because silence is worth the few extra dollars.

wierd floppy (A:) drive problem

Tried all suggestions, still no luck. Then took another 1.44 drive out of an old machine and that one works fine in my new PC (except for being ugly). So I guess I just got sent a defective drive? :shrug: Not cost effective to RMA a $10 floppy. :disgust:

low -5v issue

So what is the significance of (for example) +5v vs -5v? I'm embarrased to admit I don't know what these #s mean.

wierd floppy (A:) drive problem

low -5v issue

I've just built a new PC with an Enermax Noisetaker 485W and Soltek SL-K890Pro. Soltek's monitoring software is showing good strong (green) voltages in everything except "-5v" (note: not +5v, that is high) which is red at "-3.894". I'm not sure if I should worry about this?

I want to consider the AX8, but I haven't found much to read in the way of actual user experience. re: the Soltek, I think I would be quite confident about this board if anyone here could comment on having successfully mated it with an X800XL using only PCI-E slot power. And, if you were...

Music heard by animals

My dog enjoys some music. He generally ignores a lot, but when certain tracks play he makes what we call his "stupid happy face", a giant grin, and bobs his head .. sometimes he gets so excited he'll start running around the room, furiously wagging his tail, grabbing his toys and throwing them...

Searching for passive 939/PCI-E mobos narrowed my choices to these: Gigabyte GA-K8N Ultra-9 or Soltek SL-K890Pro-939 I read that the Gigabyte might have some keyboard troubles, and that the passive heatsink may not be enough to keep the nforce4 chip from overheating . . . . . . but...

eMachine celeron 500mhz

OK, you guys have scared me into plugging it back in. :disgust: I suppose I'll just buy a new quieter fan for it... Any recommendations to fit this CPU/heatsink? While I'm at it, maybe I'll also replace the fan inside this miniature-sized PSU ... but I'm not sure what will fit/work for that...

eMachine celeron 500mhz

The mobo/bios does not appear to have any temp monitoring. How else would you suggest I check? I'm not yet the geek I wish I was ... :o

Well, I (perhaps foolishly) ignored this advice and unplugged the fan. 24 hours later the machine is still alive, with almost no noticable difference in the temperature of the air coming out of the back. (it went from fairly cool to very mildly warm) The only fan in this 500 MHz eMachine is now...
